For those coming to the festival in March. Another spooky thing for you to get your teeth into! 🧛‍♂️

Scare yourself silly this summer at Whitby’s Dracula Experience 🧛‍♂️🦇

Looking for something spooky, silly and unmistakably Whitby this summer? Step inside The Dracula Experience, an old-school haunted attraction where Bram Stoker’s famous story meets animated scenes, electronic effects, live actors and many dark corridors.

Located on Marine Parade, the attraction explores Whitby’s connection to Dracula through eerie sets, sudden surprises and special effects that were terrifyingly advanced several decades ago.

Is it genuinely frightening? Possibly. Is it slightly kitsch? Absolutely. Is that all part of its charm? Almost certainly.

Visitors have reported squealing teenagers, nervous laughter and terrified adults pushing their partners through the corridors at speed. Others affectionately describe it as “a bit rubbish, but that’s what makes it fab” which may be one of the greatest endorsements any Whitby attraction could receive.

Expect creepy corners, jump scares, theatrical cobwebs and at least one moment when you question why you volunteered to go in first.

Whether you visit for the Dracula history, the nostalgic haunted-house experience or simply the bragging rights of saying you survived, it remains one of Whitby’s strangest and most memorable attractions.

📍 The Dracula Experience
9 Marine Parade, Whitby, YO21 3PR

🕚 Usually open from 11am to 5pm, though seasonal opening days vary, so checking before travelling is recommended.

Whitby Legends: Ghosts of Whitby Abbey and The Walled-Up Nun 👻

Whitby Abbey is known for its dramatic ruins and stunning coastal views, but there is also a darker legend that lingers in its shadows.

Local stories tell of a young nun named Constance De Beverley who fell in love with a knight, breaking her vow of celibacy. When their secret was found out, she faced a terrible punishment: she was walled up alive inside the abbey.

Some visitors say they have heard a woman’s anguished screams carried by the wind. Others claim to see the ghostly figure of a frightened young woman running through the ruins, still trying to escape her fate.

If you visit Whitby Abbey, listen closely. You might hear Constance calling from the walls. 👀

Would you walk through Whitby’s Screaming Tunnel alone? 👻🕯️

Hidden partway up Khyber Pass on Whitby’s West Cliff is a narrow stone passage with a chilling reputation. By daylight, it offers one of the town’s most unusual views, perfectly framing Whitby Abbey and St Mary’s Church through its keyhole-shaped opening. After dark, however, it becomes a very different place.

The tunnel goes by various names, depending on who you ask. It is known as the Khyber Pass Tunnel, Keyhole Tunnel, Screaming Tunnel and sometimes Dracula’s Tunnel. The passage was originally part of a small railway built to carry construction materials up the cliff during Whitby’s development as a seaside resort in the 19th century.

Over the years, visitors have reported hearing unexplained screams echoing through the stonework. Others claim to have seen a shadowy figure waiting at the far end or felt the brush of an unseen hand while walking through the darkness. Whether these encounters are ghostly, imagined or simply the result of sound travelling through the old tunnel remains a mystery.

Its association with Dracula is part of Whitby folklore rather than Bram Stoker’s original novel, but that has not stopped stories spreading that the tunnel was once the Count’s secret hiding place, and that the screams belonged to his unfortunate victims.

You can find the entrance around halfway up Khyber Pass, on the left when walking uphill from the seafront.
