💨 Would You Know What to Do During an Asthma Attack?

In the UK, someone is admitted to hospital for an asthma attack every 3 minutes. It's one of the most common medical emergencies and knowing what to do could genuinely save a life! 💙

🔴 RECOGNISING AN ASTHMA ATTACK

Look out for:

• Wheezing, coughing or chest tightness
• Shortness of breath or someone struggling to get words out
• Fast breathing or a faster heartbeat
• Their reliever inhaler (usually blue) isn't helping
• Lips or fingernails turning blue (call 999 immediately)

✅ WHAT TO DO

1️⃣ Stay calm and reassure them because panic makes it worse
2️⃣ Sit them upright and never lie them down
3️⃣ Help them use their reliever inhaler (usually blue) which should be one puff every 30-60 seconds, up to 10 puffs
4️⃣ Call 999 if they don't improve after 10 puffs, are getting worse, or are exhausted from breathing
5️⃣ If they have no inhaler then call 999 immediately

⚠️ A mild asthma attack can become life-threatening very quickly. Always take it seriously.

☀️ The sun is out and we are HERE for it! ☀️

But while you're enjoying the sunshine, it's worth knowing the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke because one needs First Aid, and the other needs 999. 🚑

🟡 HEAT EXHAUSTION Act quickly!

Symptoms include:
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness, weakness or fatigue
• Nausea
• Cool, pale, clammy skin

What to do:

✅ Move them somewhere cool
✅ Lay them down and raise their legs
✅ Give small sips of cold water
✅ Cool them down with a damp cloth or fan

Most people recover within 30 minutes with the right First Aid.

🔴 HEATSTROKE Call 999 immediately!

Symptoms include:

• High temperature (above 40°C)
• Hot, dry skin - no longer sweating
• Confusion or loss of consciousness
• Rapid, weak pulse

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Call 999 and cool the person down as quickly as possible while you wait for help.

Sunshine is wonderful but just look out for each other out there! 🧡
