New Episode Now Live

What are humans actually built for?

In this latest episode of The Integrative Continuum, I’m joined by interdisciplinary research scientist Kaya Genc for a wide ranging conversation on human evolution, nutrition, metabolism, research quality and the importance of questioning how scientific conclusions are reached.

We explore topics including nutritional epidemiology, confounding variables, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, fibre, fructose, LDL, plant based and carnivore claims, pharmaceuticals, systems biology and the difference between published research and genuinely strong evidence.

This is a thought provoking episode about looking beyond headlines, questioning assumptions and trying to understand what the biology and the evidence can actually support.

The episode is now live.

HVLA / iTHRUST Manipulation Course

We are delighted to bring Dr Giovanni Bonfanti and the iTHRUST Academy to Ennis, Co. Clare for a practical two day HVLA manipulation course on 27 and 28 February 2027.

This is a hands on training weekend designed for manual therapy practitioners who want to improve their confidence, precision and practical application of HVLA techniques.

The course will explore the core principles behind HVLA manipulation, including patient positioning, practitioner mechanics, understanding joint and motion barriers, neurophysiological responses, contraindications and red flags, and the safe application of structured manipulation techniques.

There will also be a strong practical component, including hands on supervised sessions focused on learning how to assess and engage the appropriate barrier and apply techniques with greater control and confidence.

The course is suitable for a wide range of hands on practitioners, including physiotherapists, physical therapists, massage therapists, osteopaths and others working within manual therapy.

Dates: 27 and 28 February 2027
Time: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
Location: Temple Gate Hotel, Ennis, Co. Clare
Lead Instructor: Dr Giovanni Bonfanti
Facilitated by: Dr Richard Rocker

Sometimes we spend so much time looking for complicated solutions that we overlook the basics.

Nutrition is one of the most powerful inputs we give the body every single day. What we eat can influence energy, digestion, inflammation, blood sugar regulation, hormones, recovery and overall metabolic health.

That does not mean every problem is caused by food, or that one diet is right for everyone. But it does mean that before adding more complexity, it is worth asking a simple question:

Could changing what I eat begin to change the environment in which the problem is occurring?

Sometimes the first step forward is not adding more. It is simplifying.

What are humans actually designed to eat?

That sounds like a simple question, but once you start examining evolution, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and the quality of nutrition research, the answer becomes much more interesting.
This Friday on The Integrative Continuum, I am joined by interdisciplinary research scientist Kaya Genc for a fascinating conversation about human evolution, nutrition, metabolism and how we determine what the science can genuinely support.

We challenge some widely repeated assumptions around dietary research, carbohydrates, fats, protein, fibre, cholesterol and the way human physiology may have adapted over our evolutionary history.

We also discuss an equally important question:
How do we distinguish scientific evidence from scientific opinion?

It is a long, thought provoking conversation, and I suspect it will generate plenty of discussion.

The new episode of The Integrative Continuum will be released this Friday.

One year. 26 conversations. And now Year Two begins.

The special first anniversary episode of The Integrative Continuum is now available.

In this solo episode, I look back at the first 26 conversations, the lessons that stayed with me, the themes that kept appearing across very different areas of health, and where I want to take the podcast next.

Most importantly, it is an opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has watched, listened, shared, subscribed and supported the podcast throughout its first year.

Now available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

One Year of The Integrative Continuum

One year. 26 conversations. And now, the beginning of Season Two.

I just want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who has watched, listened, shared, commented, subscribed, or supported The Integrative Continuum over the past year.

What started as an idea has grown into a space for open, thoughtful conversations around health, medicine, nutrition, metabolism, mindset, ageing, performance, the environment, and the many different factors that shape human wellbeing.

I’ve had the privilege of speaking with some truly fascinating guests, and one of the things I value most is the opportunity to explore ideas honestly, ask better questions, challenge assumptions, and continue learning.

If you’ve been with me from the beginning, thank you.
If you’ve only recently discovered the podcast, welcome.
And if there are episodes you’ve missed, there are now 26 conversations from Season One to go back and explore.

Season Two is already underway, with more guests, more ideas, and more conversations to come.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

The conversation continues.

BLOOD SUGAR PROBLEMS?

Glucose is important, but it doesn’t tell the whole metabolic story.
Three additional areas worth looking at are:

Fasting Insulin — can help reveal increased insulin demand before glucose regulation becomes more obviously abnormal.

hs-CRP — provides information about the inflammatory environment surrounding metabolic health.

Liver Enzymes — ALT, AST and GGT can provide important clues about liver and metabolic health.

Blood sugar regulation is not simply about one glucose reading.
Look at the metabolic system around it.

LOW MOOD? LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE.

Mood is influenced by far more than one pathway, but blood chemistry can sometimes reveal physiological factors worth addressing.

Three areas I would look at:

Vitamin D — involved in neurological, immune and inflammatory regulation.

Vitamin B12 — important for nervous-system function, methylation and energy metabolism.

Thyroid Function — altered thyroid activity can contribute to fatigue, cognitive sluggishness and mood changes.

Mental and emotional health should always be looked at comprehensively.

Sometimes the mind is giving us clues about what is happening elsewhere in the body.

In today’s world, many people think they are simply “low in energy,” but often the deeper issue is that they are overloaded, overstimulated, and constantly responding to too many demands at once.

Sometimes it is not that we have no energy left, but that our mental, emotional and physiological capacity is being stretched beyond what it was designed to handle.

This was one of the important themes from my recent conversation on The Integrative Continuum Podcast, learning to understand the difference between true fatigue, nervous system overload, and the constant pressure of modern life.

Protecting our energy is not just about rest. It is also about boundaries, recovery, clarity, and reducing the unnecessary demands that keep draining us.
