Around a third of care homes are rated requires improvement or inadequate for well-led. That's one of the headline findings in the CQC's 2025/26 report, published today.

Most services are rated good or outstanding. But leadership is the area most in need of improvement.

The report also found:
➡️ Governance shortfalls in 55% of care home assessments that looked at that quality statement
➡️ Only 38% of direct care staff had completed dementia training
➡️ International recruitment into social care fell to just over 30,000 in 2025/26

The services rated outstanding had something in common. Not more paperwork. Clearer oversight. Training matched to the people they support. Competence checked through audits, observation and supervision.
