I Guess I’m Paying Privately Now

Since returning from London through ESAIS in May, I have had no coordinated public medical care.

I am still waiting for pain management, have now been placed on a neurology waiting list and paid €190 for a private endocrinology appointment because the public appointment never came.

Almost one year after Ireland’s Endometriosis Framework was published, patients are still coordinating their own care while promised staff and services remain unavailable.

As someone who has spent years campaigning and advocating for improvements in women’s healthcare, I believe these conversations need the voices and lived experiences of women and patients at their centre.

As I approach two years in my home, after six years of renting and three years of hidden homelessness, I am still living with the trauma and destruction it caused.

Not having access to the support I needed as a young single mother in the early 2000s had a significant impact on my life, my choices and the options available to me. My advocacy work was created from everything I could not access.

Many of the supports available today, and the continued calls for those still desperately needed, exist because campaigners like me found the courage to speak out.

That trauma did not just impact my life. It spread into the lives of those I love too. I don’t think anyone can truly understand the impact of homelessness, housing insecurity and living without adequate support until they have experienced it themselves.

For now, I am holding tightly to the glimmers and praying that life will become more peaceful.

If you have not been a part of the past decade of my life, you genuinely do not know me.

Hard to believe this is two years already when I travelled to London for the Pause Live event learning all things Menopause and also attended the Endometriosis Foundation event in Marble Arch for Yoga - what a beautiful investment into my self 🌸

Ed Sheeran’s statement is BS.

He says he keeps politics off his professional platform because children follow him and because his music offers safety, sanctuary and escapism.

ESCAPISM DOES NOT ERASE A GENOCIDE.

A “safe space” that requires Palestinian suffering to remain invisible is neither safe nor neutral.

If children are old enough to follow celebrities online and attend stadium concerts, they and their parents deserve an informed choice about the values those celebrities publicly uphold.

They are also old enough to learn that Palestinian children exist, that their lives have value and that they deserve freedom.

You cannot say the decision was not yours while continuing the tour, protecting the contracts and leaving Macklemore off the stage.

Silence is a position.

Selective solidarity is political.
