Building safer care through knowledge, collaboration and shared commitment.

Organized by the Quality Assurance Department in line with World Patient Safety Day 2026, the Patient Safety Symposium brought together representatives from external hospitals and internal stakeholders to exchange knowledge, experiences and best practices in delivering safe care for patients with noncommunicable diseases.

The symposium featured insightful guest lectures
🔸 Senior Professor Priyadarshani Galappatthy, Senior Professor and Chair of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo — Safe Medication Use for the Continuum of NCD Care
🔸 Dr. Chandana Gajanayake, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka — Lifelong Care for Patients with NCDs
🔸 Ms. Nirosha Gallage, Head Dietitian, Department of Dietetics, Lanka Hospitals — Dietary Controls for Healthy Living

Participants also shared inspiring patient safety success stories, demonstrating how practical initiatives, teamwork and a strong safety culture can create meaningful improvements in patient care.

The symposium strengthened collaboration and partnership among healthcare professionals, reinforcing our shared commitment to making every stage of NCD care safer, more coordinated and truly patient-centred.

A shared pledge. Powerful stories. One unwavering commitment-to safer care for every patient.

The inauguration ceremony marked the beginning of Lanka Hospitals’ Patient Safety Week 2026, observed in line with World Patient Safety Day under the theme, “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases.”

Together, we renewed our Patient Safety Pledge, listened to inspiring testimonials from our own staff, and received valuable messages from our leaders-reminding us that patient safety is not merely a responsibility, but a promise we uphold through every decision and every action.

As we begin Patient Safety Week 2026, we come together around this year’s WHO theme: “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases”, with the powerful call to action, “Safe care for life!”

People living with conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases often depend on healthcare services over many years. Every interaction is therefore an opportunity to make care safer, prevent avoidable harm and protect quality of life.

Patient safety is not the responsibility of one person, one department or one profession. It belongs to all of us — every day, with every patient, at every point of care.

Let us begin this week by renewing our commitment to make safety part of everything we do.
