Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme We conduct internationally excellent science to benefit human health. Our laboratories lead the region in sophistication, precision, breadth and throughput.

We conduct internationally excellent science to benefit human health with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. MLW is built around excellent laboratories, strategically located in the largest hospital in Malawi, closely linked with the community and an integral part of the medical school. These relationships provide a unique opportunity replicated in few centres in Africa to study major health issues spanning both community and hospital. Malawi provides a unique supportive environment for our MOP, with government commitment to universal health coverage, strong engagement with research and willingness to innovate around evidence-based public health programmes. MLW surveillance and diagnostic platforms provide clinicians with early indicators of changes in the incidence of common and emerging diseases. Our combination of epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory science allows us, together with internationally leading collaborators, to determine the underlying mechanisms of important diseases. We study individual and community behaviour and bring this together with basic biology in order to plan appropriate interventions that improve health. Our translational pipeline, while providing an excellent academic environment, results in significant clinical trials and we transfer the findings to policy leading to improved health in Malawi and world-wide. We have two major well- established Programmes with clearly de-fined aims for the next 10 years, built on excellent achievements to date. These Programmes are:

- Preventing death from severe infection
- Transmission reduction in infectious diseases

The Programmes have specific objectives and key deliverables for 2018 to 2022. In addition, we have a Strategic Initiative to target selected high burden chronic diseases (lung impairment, stroke, blindness), particularly related to HIV. In partnership with the College of Medicine we have Training Aims to attract, train and retain local and international senior scientists. Through our partnership with the Ministry of Health, our Policy Aims ensure that our research is both relevant and applied to improve human health.

Did you know that research evidence can take an average of 17 years to be adopted into routine practice? This gap highlights the importance of research translation and innovation in ensuring that scientific discoveries create meaningful benefits for communities.

To help bridge this gap, the MLW Innovation Hub held a two-day Innovation Training Programme from yesterday under the theme
"๐˜พ๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™ ๐™„๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ ๐™›๐™ง๐™ค๐™ข ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™˜๐™," bringing together participants from MLW, KUHeS, and QECH for learning, collaboration, and practical engagement.

The programme strengthened participants' understanding of innovation and research translation, equipping them with the skills to identify opportunities, developing innovative ideas, and transforming research findings into practical solutions that address real-world health challenges.

This work aligns with growing global efforts to strengthen knowledge translation. In 2025, the World Health Organization launched a global research agenda for knowledge translation that brought together over 800 participants from 100 countries, highlighting the worldwide commitment to ensuring that research informs policy and practice more effectively.

Through initiatives like this, the MLW Innovation Hub continues to empower researchers and professionals to move beyond academic publications and create solutions that improve health outcomes in Malawi and beyond.

Four days of science, ideas, collaboration, and conversations on how research can make a greater difference in peopleโ€™s lives.

We closed our 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting by celebrating excellence through awards for best research poster and oral presentations, alongside special Directorโ€™s Awards recognising research innovation and community impact. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

As we leave ASM2026, some important messages stay with us:

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ People must remain at the heart of everything we do.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Break silos - co-design, collaborate, and build stronger networks across disciplines and institutions.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Embrace a changing global landscape through innovation, technology, and new ways of working.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Continue creating opportunities for young researchers and women in science.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Turn research and evidence into policy and practice, working closely with government and other partners.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Think boldly about financial sustainability, domestic research funding, and the future of health research beyond the next decade.
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Most importantly, continue turning MLWโ€™s strategy and ambitions into action and impact.

The ASM may have ended, but the conversations, collaborations, and ideas continue.

Our sessions sparked compelling conversations on how behavioural and social factors shape health outcomes, and why understanding them is key to finding solutions that work.

One message stood out:
โ€œHealth problems cannot be solved by health solutions alone.โ€

More science. More perspectives. More conversations focused on improving health in Malawi.

We kicked off the morning exploring MLWโ€™s growing research on acute febrile illnesses in communities (illnesses characterized by a sudden onset of fever).

From sharing research findings to debating solutions for Malawiโ€™s health challenges, ASM has been about one thing: "Transforming Health Through Research in a Changing Global Landscape"

From mothers and children to mental health and people-centred care, Day 3 continued with important conversations

Maternal, Neonatal & Child Health - How can we bridge the gap between evidence and better outcomes for mothers and children through research, innovation and partnerships?

Mental Health - What will it take to strengthen mental health as a research and policy priority?

Access, Quality & People-Centred Care - What research priorities can help improve access, quality and ensure care puts people at the centre of Malawiโ€™s health system?

Another day of sharing evidence, challenging ideas and exploring how research can translate into real-world impact.

The session concluded with a series of insightful poster presentations showcasing the work of researchers from various fields.

What would Malawiโ€™s health system need to look like by 2032 to be genuinely prepared for climate-related and pandemic threats?

That question sparked some exciting conversations during our morning session on Health Systems, Climate & Pandemic Resilience.

Our key presenters and participants explored the growing impact of climate change on health, and how Malawi can build stronger, more adaptable and resilient health systems for the future.

We take you back to yesterdayโ€™s powerful keynote lecture, delivered in honour of a remarkable legacy.

The Molyneux Lecture celebrated our founding Co-Director, Professor Malcolm Molyneux, whose vision and commitment helped shape the MLW we know today.

Delivered by Professor Rob Heyderman, former MLW Director, the lecture explored decades of infectious disease research in Africa; and challenged research institutions to collaborate more boldly, innovate and rethink how we respond to infectious diseases in a rapidly changing global landscape.

A fitting tribute to the past; and a bold call to shape the future of science in Africa.

Some of the keynotes from yesterday's session at the MLW Annual Scientific Meeting.

Day 2 of the MLW Annual Scientific Meeting is underway!

This morning, the spotlight turns to vaccines, children and vulnerable populations, with a strong focus on shaping the future of vaccine research in Africa.

The session will showcase research spanning pre-clinical and clinical development, including work on Shigella, malaria, iNTS, typhoid and cholera. Discussions will also explore a critical challenge: how do we translate evidence generated in Malawi into national and global guidelines and programmes that deliver impact at scale?

From advancing MLW's vaccine research to tackling antimicrobial resistance and strengthening sustainable, African-led research capacity, there's plenty to unpack today.
