Stories from the HEART 💗 | Chin Yean Choon’s Journey

At 76 years old, Chin Yean Choon faced more than a heart condition. He also struggled with a fear of surgery, with white coat syndrome adding to his anxiety about medical care.

Yet, one concern motivated him to move forward: if his heart remained weak, would he be able to undergo surgery should another health condition arise?

Despite his fears, he underwent coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), performed by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Basheer Ahamed at Northern Heart Hospital Penang, taking an important step towards caring for his heart.

Today, he shares his journey with a heartfelt reminder: “You must not let fear overcome you.” ❤️

At Northern Heart Hospital Penang, “Restoring the Rhythm of Life” is more than just a slogan. It is a commitment to supporting patients through uncertainty and helping them face treatment with greater understanding and confidence.

What does “healthy” actually mean to you?

Feeling perfectly fine?
Sleeping well? Eating well?

They’re all good signs. But maybe the way we think about “being healthy” needs an update.

Health isn’t something we can fully understand just by guessing from how we look, feel or live.

And that’s where a proper health check has value, it gives us a chance to understand where we stand and manage our health more proactively, instead of waiting until something needs urgent attention.

📌 Save this for your next health check, or share it with that friend who always says, “I’m healthy lah, no need check.”

When it’s time to check in on your health, book an appointment with Northern Heart Hospital Penang.

In conjunction with Northern Heart Hospital Penang’s 2nd Anniversary, we’re proud to share the story of our fifth Heartbeats of Penang CSR patient for 2026. ❤️

The PCI procedure was performed by Dr. Donald Ang, Consultant Cardiologist, giving our patient a renewed chance at a stronger, healthier heart.

Behind every procedure is more than a diagnosis. There is a person, a family and a life ready to begin a new chapter. 💙

🩸 589 Blood Packs. Over 700 Penangites. Countless Reasons to Be Thankful. ❤️

What makes Penang special? It’s the people who never hesitate to show up for one another.

Throughout 2026, Northern Heart Hospital Penang organised four blood donation drives, and with each drive, we witnessed more Penangites coming forward with one shared purpose: to help save lives.

March: 94 blood packs
June: 123 blood packs
August: 168 blood packs
October: 204 blood packs

Together, we collected 589 lifesaving blood packs 🩸!

But beyond the numbers, it’s about the first-time donors who found the courage to give, the regular donors who kept coming back, and everyone who took time out of their day to help someone they may never meet.

That’s the Penang spirit! ❤️

Proving once again that when someone’s in need, Penangites show up.

To every donor, volunteer, partner and supporter, thank you for making this possible. You are the reason we keep going!

And we’re not stopping here! 🚀

In 2027, we’re bringing you a next-level blood donation experience, built around your comfort and enjoyment.

Same lifesaving mission. A whole new experience.

See you in 2027! 🩸❤️

“Doctor, he just had heart surgery. Why are you asking him to walk?”

It’s a question families understandably ask. Rest matters, but recovery after heart surgery can involve more than staying in bed.

Swipe through to understand why movement may become part of the recovery plan.

A small opening can make a big difference to how blood moves through the heart.

Your aortic valve has one simple job: open, let blood out, then close again.

But when that opening becomes narrower, blood has less space to pass through, and over time, the heart may need to work harder to keep blood moving around the body.

This is what happens in aortic stenosis.

It can develop gradually over time, and one common cause is calcium build-up on the valve as we age. Some people may not notice any symptoms at first, which is why changes in the heart are not always something we can recognise on our own.

The illustration above shows the difference clearly: one valve opens freely and widely, while the other has a much smaller opening.
