Sun protection tips to save for sun-safety:

☺️ Always apply much more sunscreen than you think you need - until the skin is white
👍Then rub gently or let it absorb (trust the process!)
👐 Cover all exposed areas 🦶👂

Don’t rely on sunscreen alone to protect your skin:

Cover up with UV protective clothing, hats, sunglasses
Avoid peak sun 10am-3pm
Seek shade
Reapply every 2 hours or immediately after sweating, getting wet, rubbing or toweling

Have you heard of Cosmeticorexia?🧴 A new term coined by dermatologists and academics: it’s the unhealthy obsession with cosmetic and skincare products from a very young age. A worrying trend that we all need to address and be aware of. Please listen to Dr Birnie ⬆️

Is this something you as a parent or carer have seen or experienced❓

Prof Giovanni Damiani, an Italian Dermatologist at the University of Milan studied girls between 8-14 and saw an obsession with skin perfection, largely fuelled by social media, the social pressures of ‘perfect skin’ and skincare/ cosmetic brands marketing to younger children. covered this story and study widely yesterday - DM us for a link 🙏

Children do not need complex routines.

They do not need strong actives and retinal.

They do not need ‘anti-aging’ solutions or ‘glass skin’.

Young skin needs only the basics:

▫️Cleanse (mild, gentle)
▫️Moisturise (not essential)
▫️SPF (essential sunscreen protection - not SPF in makeup)
▫️Wash the SPF off at night

Border: edges irregular or jagged

Colour: uneven/patchy; shades of black, white, grey, brown or pink; two or more colours = suspicious

Diameter: for most melanomas, at least 6mm

Evolving: changing in size, shape or colour

‘Funny’: if it looks odd, or you aren’t happy about it for any reason

📹 An SPF30 Cream Vs SPF50 Invisible Spray demonstration by Dr Birnie, a Consultant Dermatologist and Skin Cancer surgeon 🩺

It’s a fact that you can still burn wearing sunscreen if it is not applied correctly 🔴

If using a sunscreen spray, follow these application tips 👇

▫️Apply multiple layers - 3-4 coats at least. A single spray is not adequate coverage
▫️Spray it directly into the hand and then apply to the skin for an even coverage - and then rub it in

ALWAYS...

✅ Use a high UVB/UVA sunscreen protection to protect against burning and skin cancer

✅ Check the UVA rating (PPD, Boots start rating or PA++++) as well as the SPF

✅ Wear much more sunscreen than you think you need + reapply every 2 hours OR straight after getting wet, sweating or towelling

✅ If out in peak UV - do not rely on sunscreen alone. Cover up, seek shade & keep kids out of the sun between 11am-3pm

Finally, PLEASE choose a sunscreen that you can afford to wear lots of - and reapply often - without worrying about the cost 💸

have just launched a kids SPF, it’s under £8 and a really lovely formula! Fragrance free, lightweight, and actually accessible.

Sun safety shouldn’t be a luxury purchase but for so many the cost to keep ourselves protected is a struggle.

I’ve always been a huge advocate of Altruist, what they are doing to educate, and to make SPF available for everyone. This launch is a fantastic move from them.

If you do just one thing this week, please don’t burn 🔴 Please read and share this important advice by Melanoma Focus

UV levels are set to reach HIGH levels (5 - 7) across parts of the UK this weekend ☀️

Remember: it's not the temperature that matters. It's the UV index.

When the UV index reaches 3 (moderate) or above, sun protection is recommended to lower your risk of melanoma.

Protect your skin this weekend by:
🧴 Applying SPF30+ sunscreen
🔁 Reapply every 2 hours
🕶️ Wear UV protected sunglasses
🧢 Cover up and wear a hat
🌳 Seek shade during peak hours (11am – 3pm)

Even on cloudy or breezy days, UV rays can still damage your skin.

💙 Nearly 9 in 10 melanomas are preventable. Protecting your skin matters.

Check the UV Index on your weather app before heading outdoors and enjoy the sunshine safely ☀️
