Hine Health’s Position on ACTs ridiculous campaign on scrapping Māori and Pacific med school places.

Hine Health is clear: Māori health inequities are real, and Māori wāhine continue to experience poorer health outcomes. This is not a failure of our people—it reflects systems that have not been designed with Māori, for Māori.

Our first Hine Health Day at Tauteihiihi Marae showed the need for trusted, culturally safe prevention, screening and care close to home. We know that rural Māori are nearly twice as likely to die from any cause and more than twice as likely to die from conditions that timely, accessible healthcare might have prevented or delayed.

Calling Māori medical-entry pathways a “quota” misses the point. MAPAS and equivalent pathways do not lower standards; they address structural barriers and build a medical workforce trusted by the communities it serves.

Removing Māori and Pacific pathways would move Aotearoa further from health equity. We support strengthening these pathways, increasing medical-school places, and investing in mentoring, rural training and Māori health leadership.

Māori health requires Māori leadership, Māori doctors and Māori lead solutions.

🌿 EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: HINE HEALTH PREVENTION PILOT 🌿

Kia ora wāhine mā,

Hine Health along with Maihealth is inviting expressions of interest from 10 wāhine Māori to join our new 90-day upstream prevention pilot.

Our current healthcare industry is focused on reacting to illness. Hine health along wifh Maihealth want to work differently by identifying risk earlier, strengthening health knowledge, closing screening gaps and supporting wāhine before preventable illness becomes a crisis.

Over 90 days, each participant will complete a confidential Hine Health Precision Prevention Passport, bringing together:

- Whakapapa and whānau health history
- Personal health goals
- Cardiovascular and metabolic health
- Screening needs
- Whare tangata and menopause health
- Mental wellbeing, sleep, nutrition and movement
- Barriers affecting access to healthcare
- Refferals for body scans.

Together, we will develop an individual prevention plan, with agreed navigation and follow-up throughout the 90 days.

This is a whole-person prevention pilot. It is not a weight-loss or medication programme. Medication is not guaranteed and would only ever be considered following an individual clinical assessment.

We are looking for wāhine Māori who:

- Are aged 18 years or older
- Live rurally in Aotearoa
- Can participate for the full 90 days
- Can attend an initial assessment and scheduled follow-ups
- Want to better understand their health
- Want to help us strengthen this kaupapa for other wāhine

🌸 FOUNDING PILOT FEE: NZ$99 TOTAL 🌸

There is no cost to submit an expression of interest. The NZ$99 fee is only payable if you are offered and accept a place.

The fee covers participation in the 90-day pilot, your Precision Prevention Passport, individual prevention plan and scheduled follow-up support.

Medicines, laboratory tests, MRI BODY SCANS, imaging, specialist appointments and other external services will be additional options and costs will always be discussed with you first.

So excited that Hine Health will be presenting at the 2026 International Indigenous Women’s Health, Wellbeing & Leadership Conference in Brisbane. 🩷

Our kōrero will be about something at the heart of Hine Health: Reclaiming Prevention, Hauora & Mana Motuhake.

When our health system is largely centred around illness, disease and crisis, we are going right upstream. When they go down we go up. ###.

For Indigenous communities, prevention itself can be an act of resistance.

It is reclaiming knowledge.
Reclaiming agency.
Reclaiming our relationship with our bodies and hauora.

It is mana motuhake — having greater authority over our own health and the health of generations to come.

We are looking forward to sharing the Hine Health kaupapa, learning alongside Indigenous wāhine from across our communities, and continuing the kōrero about what healthcare could look like when we move from simply treating sickness to actively creating wellness in our whanau, from our marae and hapu.

What if I told you there will never be enough doctors — and Māori wāhine will continue to get the short end of the stick.

The truth is, the system was never built with us at the centre.

And I refuse to be a doctor working inside a broken system without trying to create something better.

That is why my focus is now Hine Health.

A safe space for wāhine Māori to come together, wānanga, heal, learn about our bodies, reconnect to our mātauranga, and find our own solutions to keeping ourselves and our whānau healthy — with the assistance of specialist care, medical knowledge, and culturally safe support.

This is not just about medicine.This is about prevention.This is about knowledge.This is about mana motuhake.

Mai wahine mo wahine na wahine

Because nobody understands our stories, our struggles, our strength, and our whakapapa the way we do.
