Today our hearts are heavy as we mourn the sudden passing of our beloved kuia, Marjorie “Te Maari” Joe.
09 January 1930 – 05 August 2026
Devoted and loving companion of Audrey and Puhi (her beloved cat). Beloved wife of the late Dennis Joe. Cherished daughter of the late Dan Hill and Merata Hill (née McLean). Loving mother of Dan, Mark, the late Alan, and late Megan. A treasured kuia to countless generations.
A deeply cherished nana, Te Maari lived a life of unwavering service to her whānau, her people, and her community.
She will be remembered for her staunch advocacy for wāhine, as a foundation member of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, her work as a Welfare Officer with the Department of Māori Affairs, and as a co-founder of Te Kupenga Hauora Ahuriri. Her legacy of leadership, service, and aroha touched countless lives across the motu.
Until her final days, her wisdom, intelligence, and sharp mind never left her. She remained a treasured source of guidance, strength, and mātauranga for all who knew her.
Kua hinga tētahi rākau whakamarumaru. Kua hoki tētahi pou tokomanawa ki te pō.
Today, Te Maari will lie at Ōmāhu Marae, where she will be welcomed onto the marae at 4.00 pm.
Tomorrow, she will return to Wharerangi Marae at 3.00 pm, where she will remain until her nehu on Saturday 8 August at 11.00 am.
Kua hoki a Te Maari ki te tapunipunitanga o te wairua. Ka tino ngaro ia i te tini me te mano. Ka maumaharatia, ka arohaina hoki ia mō ake tonu atu.
Moe mai rā e te mareikura. Haere, haere, haere atu rā.
