I had a ni**le in the back of my head saying “You should wait”.
But I ignored it because I did not want to consider the worst case scenario. It was probably nothing to worry about, and even if it was the big C, the trip was nearly a year away. I’ll be fine by then…
But when you get diagnosed with cancer, there is no quick fix.
7 months of active treatment look like 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy with 8 weeks recovery, 15 rounds of radiation, a bilateral oophorectomy with 4 weeks recovery and months of deciding if I would have reconstructive therapy.
3 years later, we took the trip.
No more treatment or surgery, cancer free and feeling in a good place physically and mentally.
I have days where I don’t even think about cancer and life has fallen into a beautiful routine, of some boring normality.
2023 me, would be so proud to see me now. Knowing it all worked out and we’d get there eventually.
So If you are going through treatment or just finished and landing with the reality of what has just happened. I know it feels unbearable at times. But keep going, it does get better on the other side and you will settle into the new (and different) version of yourself. 💖
