“Hi Becky,
Did you know vaginal births can cause this hidden injury… that almost no one knows about?
I myself have it… And it shocked me when I found out…14 years after the birth of my second child!
For years, I couldn't understand why my pelvic floor physio always said my left side was less active. No matter what I did, no matter how consistent I was with my pelvic floor training, I couldn't increase my pelvic floor score beyond 3 out of 5. I didn't feel as strong as I felt I should — especially given everything I do and everything I know.
I just assumed I wasn't doing enough. Or maybe I wasn’t doing something right. Sound familiar?
Then, just before my rectocele repair, I went to see a new physio — someone I'd known for years but never been treated by. She was doing an internal assessment and stopped and asked me: "Has anyone ever told you that you have an avulsion?"
She explained that she felt what appeared to be a levator ani avulsion on my left side. The levator ani is a group of three muscles in the pelvic floor responsible for continence and organ support. (Levator means LIFT. Ani means A**S. Literally — lift the a**s. Now you'll never forget it. 😄)
After my rectocele repair, I traveled to see a specialist who confirmed it: I have a partial levator ani avulsion on my left side — a birth injury I had been walking around with for years without knowing.
18 to 30% of vaginal births can result in this injury. That is not a small number. And most women — like me — have absolutely no idea.
A levator ani avulsion significantly increases your risk of both incontinence AND prolapse.
It can also explain why some women feel "open" or "gaping," notice lost sensation during in*******se, or feel like no matter how hard they work, they just can't seem to make progress.
If that's you — if you've tried everything and still feel like you're not getting anywhere — please ask to be evaluated for an avulsion. Every woman who delivers vaginally should ideally be screened around 12 months after birth. Most aren't. And that needs to change.
As for me — I'm managing my symptoms well. I don't have incontinence. My bladder prolapse is stable and most days I have no symptoms at all.
And the urogynecologist who diagnosed me actually said: “It's a good thing you've done so much pelvic floor work — or things would be a lot worse.”
That meant everything to me. Because it's proof that even when the cards aren't in your favour, showing up consistently for your body matters.
And the tool that has made the biggest difference for me — beyond Buff M**f exercises — is Hypopressives. These are different from Kegels or your Buff M**f exercises. The hypopressive method is a specific breathing and postural technique designed to create a brief upward lift, improve pelvic floor function, posture and even digestion.
I do my Hypopressives regularly because I know my risks. I have a partial avulsion. I have a history of prolapse and still have an early stage bladder prolapse. I’ve had a pelvic surgery. I am 5 years post menopause. The research shows that Hypopressives can reduce and even improve prolapse symptoms, even when there's structural damage underneath.
That's not a small thing. That's hope with evidence behind it.
For women like me — and potentially like you — consistent hypopressives practice can:
✅ Reduce that heavy, bulging, "something falling out" feeling
✅ Help prevent prolapse symptoms from getting worse over time
✅ Take the downward pressure OFF your pelvic floor so it can actually recover and strengthen ✅ Support comfortable, confident intimacy again
✅ Let you lift, move, and exercise without fear
✅ Give you confidence in your body again
So I do them daily. Non-negotiable. Not out of fear — but out of respect for my body and what it needs to stay strong. I put myself at the top of my to-do list and show up consistently. I truly believe they are one of the reasons my symptoms haven't progressed.
If you're in a similar situation — or even if you're just starting to wonder whether prolapse might be part of your story — the 28-Day Hypopressives Challenge inside the Buff M**f Membership is where I'd invite you to start.
