A farewell to one of the most important figures in Polish history 🇵🇱🕯️
A few days ago, the Polish Archives rediscovered a short film, the funeral of Józef Piłsudski, who died on May 12th, 1935. Marshal Piłsudski was one of the key leaders behind Poland’s return to independence after 123 years of partitions. He became a symbol of the reborn Poland.
His funeral became one of the largest and most emotional public ceremonies of the interwar period in Poland - it lasted 6 days long. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered to say goodbye.
Piłsudski’s body was transported from Warsaw to Kraków, where he was eventually buried at Wawel Cathedral among Poland’s most honored historical figures. The ceremony was not only a farewell to a leader, but also a powerful moment of unity and remembrance of the generation that had fought for freedom.
