Recent neuroscience is telling us that putting sour candy in your mouth during a panic attack can help you leave the attack faster. But how does this work?

It interrupts a specific neurological loop that breathing exercises alone often can't. A panic attack isn't a thought problem. It's a nervous system event! The prefrontal cortex - where we think rationally - goes partially offline.

The brain can't process two competing streams of intense sensory information simultaneously. The sour of the candy or a lemon (high citric acid!) triggers the trigeminal nerve response - face changes, saliva response, demanding attention to the body.

1. Suck on a sour candy for 30 seconds.
2. Inhale through the nose, and exhale through the mouth for 30-90 seconds.
3. Then, your logic and grounding statements can work.

The best ones? Warheads, Toxic Waste, Sour Patch Kids, lemon wedge, citric acid packet.

Tip? Cold water, cold air, and a very very big sigh can also activate the same nerve. Think of it like an emergency brake đź’¨

The relationship you have with your therapist is exactly that - a relationship! And you're allowed to shape it. A lot of people are worried about being honest with their therapist. Speaking the truth does not make you difficult! It makes you an active part of your healing. The best work happens when you stop performing and start asking for what you actually need.

Many people use depression as a synonym for sadness, during brief moments of emotional pain or low mood. This can create a lot of confusion around what depression really is, and when to seek help.

This is a buzz word that many people are using now. But what does it actually mean?

Neurtypical refers to someone who thinks and processes information in a way that is expected for their age and cultural norms.

Neurodiverse is the opposite. For example, an autistic individual sees the world in different ways. They may prefer routines or focus deeply on their interests.

In my opinion, everyone has some form of neurodiversity. But not everyone has is to the extent that it can impact their functioning. Let's use the word meaningfully!
