Recent neuroscience is telling us that putting sour candy in your mouth during a panic attack can help you leave the attack faster. But how does this work?
It interrupts a specific neurological loop that breathing exercises alone often can't. A panic attack isn't a thought problem. It's a nervous system event! The prefrontal cortex - where we think rationally - goes partially offline.
The brain can't process two competing streams of intense sensory information simultaneously. The sour of the candy or a lemon (high citric acid!) triggers the trigeminal nerve response - face changes, saliva response, demanding attention to the body.
1. Suck on a sour candy for 30 seconds.
2. Inhale through the nose, and exhale through the mouth for 30-90 seconds.
3. Then, your logic and grounding statements can work.
The best ones? Warheads, Toxic Waste, Sour Patch Kids, lemon wedge, citric acid packet.
Tip? Cold water, cold air, and a very very big sigh can also activate the same nerve. Think of it like an emergency brake đź’¨
