Skin Cancer Can Hide Where You Least Expect It.

Did you know melanoma can develop on the palms of your hands, soles of your feet, or even underneath your nails?

Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM) is rare, but it accounts for a much larger percentage of melanoma cases in people with darker skin tones.

Reggae legend Bob Marley died from this type of melanoma at just 36 years old. What reportedly started as a spot beneath his toenail was initially mistaken for a soccer injury.

Unlike many other melanomas, ALM does not appear to be linked to sun exposure. That means sunscreen alone won't protect you.

Don't ignore dark streaks beneath your nails, changing spots on your palms or soles, or sores that won't heal.

Many people with darker skin grow up hearing that skin cancer isn't a concern. Melanin does offer some natural protection but isn't the same as immunity.

Lower Risk, But Later Diagnosis
Melanoma is less common in Black Americans than in white Americans. Nobody disputes that. The concern is what happens once it does show up.

A CDC-published analysis of national cancer registry data found that only about 55% of Black patients with melanoma were diagnosed at a localized stage, compared with 78% of white patients. Black patients were also about three times as likely to be diagnosed after the cancer had already spread to distant parts of the body (16% vs. 5%). The five-year relative survival rate was 66.2% for Black patients and 90.1% for white patients.

The researchers pointed to delays in diagnosis as a likely driver of that gap. Later diagnosis, worse outcomes. It really is that simple, and that frustrating.

Darker Skin Doesn't Mean You're Safe From Skin Cancer.

Melanin offers some natural protection from the sun, but it doesn't make you immune to skin cancer. Unfortunately, skin cancer in people with darker skin tones is often diagnosed later, when treatment can be more difficult.

One type, acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM), can develop on the palms, soles of the feet, and underneath the nails.

Warning signs to watch for:
• Dark spots that grow or change
• New or changing dark streaks beneath nails
• Bruises under nails that don't grow out
• Sores that won't heal
