Today, we pause to remember the lives that were lost 25 years ago. We honor the courage of the first responders and everyday heroes who stepped toward the face of tragedy.

May we carry forward their legacy of unity, resilience and compassion.

Plum Landing, founded in 1962 by educator Ida Mighell in honor of her sister Jessie, has long been a home for retired teachers and lifelong learners. In 2022, the community established the Jessie Mighell Scholarship Fund, offering staff members $1,000 toward continuing their education.

The 2026 scholarship was awarded to Dexter McWilliams, a kitchen staff member and Aurora native. Dexter, a first‑generation college student, will enter the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign this fall, majoring in Psychology with minors in Data Science and Statistics.

A graduate of District 129 schools, Dexter served as the student representative to the Board of Education and captained the varsity tennis team. In his scholarship essay, he reflected on the leadership, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills he gained both through school and his three years working in Plum Landing’s kitchen.

Dexter shared that pursuing higher education will strengthen his future opportunities and serve as a meaningful example for his younger brother. Plum Landing is proud to support his academic journey and continue the Mighell legacy of empowering education.

How could we have forgotten to share our Christmas in July festivities! Our July Happy Hour was full of holiday cheer — Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by for photo ops, and our residents and guests dressed the part beautifully.

Nothing beats a little mid‑summer magic with our Plum family.

We were delighted to welcome members of the City of Lights Theatre's cast of Annie for a special abridged performance for our residents. The talented young performers brought the beloved story to life with songs, smiles, and plenty of energy, creating a wonderful afternoon of entertainment and nostalgia.

A heartfelt thank you to the cast and volunteers for sharing their time and talents with our Plum Landing family. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed this special sneak peek of the show and were inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of these young actors.

If you enjoyed what you saw, be sure to catch the full production of Annie at Aurora University's Perry Theater!

🌟 Thank you, City of Lights Theatre, for brightening our day and reminding us that "The sun'll come out tomorrow!" 🌟
