September is Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month.
Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders affecting about 100,000 people in the U.S. and more than 8 million worldwide. The disease changes the shape and function of red blood cells and can cause severe pain, anemia, infections, stroke and other serious health complications.
