Flu season is here! Did you know that getting sick can be a trigger for people with G6PD deficiency?

While many people are familiar with avoiding certain foods and medications, bacterial and viral infections can also create oxidative stress that may lead to hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells).

A few things to keep in mind this flu season:

✔️ Know the signs of a possible G6PD reaction, including dark urine, unusual fatigue, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.

✔️ Check with your healthcare provider before taking cold, flu, or fever medications.

✔️ Make sure your healthcare team knows about your G6PD status.

Being prepared and knowing what to watch for can make a difference, especially when caring for children with G6PD deficiency.

📲 Save this post for flu season and share it with another G6PD family!

Would you recognize the signs of a possible G6PD-related hemolytic episode? 🩸

For someone with G6PD deficiency, certain medications, foods, infections, and other oxidative stressors can cause red blood cells to break down faster than the body can replace them. This is known as hemolysis.

Possible signs can include unusual tiredness or weakness, pale skin, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, shortness of breath, or a rapid heartbeat. Symptoms and severity can vary from person to person.

Knowing the signs is important, but so is knowing your G6PD status, understanding potential triggers, and making sure your healthcare providers know about your deficiency.

💚 Save this post so you can reference the signs later, and share it with someone who should know about G6PD deficiency.

When should the conversation about G6PD deficiency begin? It may be earlier than you think. 💚

Perinatal health focuses on the health and well-being of mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, birth, and the period surrounding birth. For expecting families, this can also be an important time to learn about G6PD deficiency, understand family health history, and start conversations with healthcare providers.

G6PD awareness doesn’t have to begin after a baby is born. Education can start during pregnancy and continue through newborn screening, infancy, and beyond.

Swipe through to learn more about perinatal health and why we’re bringing G6PD awareness into the conversation earlier.

Why wait until birth to start the conversation about G6PD deficiency? 💚

Because G6PD deficiency is inherited, pregnancy can be an opportunity to learn about your family history, understand your own G6PD status, and ask your healthcare provider questions before your baby arrives.

Starting the conversation earlier does not replace newborn screening. Instead, awareness during pregnancy and screening after birth can be parts of the same journey.

Pregnancy → Birth → Newborn → Beyond

Know your family history. Ask questions. Learn about testing and screening. And keep the conversation going as your child grows.
