Pauline Gladys Coop, 102, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on August 19, 2026, at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born on August 28, 1923, in Iconium, Iowa to Shirley W. and Bertha Gladys (McDanel) Townsend. She graduated from Moravia High School in 1941. On November 21, 1942, she married Lowell Dwight Coop in Unionville, Missouri. He passed away on April 3, 2005.

Pauline was a farm wife and helped Dwight in every aspect of running a farm. She was active in the Democratic Party and served on the election board, helping to run elections and count votes. She was also quick to help people and was a very giving person. Dwight and Pauline loved to go camping together and started a camping club, the Wapello Traveling Sams. They visited 49 states, Canada, and Mexico. They also visited several European countries, a real highlight of their travels together. After retiring, the couple spent many winters in Texas and made many dear friends while there. She was an active member of the community, 4-H Extension, and the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield. Pauline also enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Carol Ann Coatney, 58, of Troy, Iowa stepped into the presence of Jesus on August 19, 2026, at the MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by loved ones. She was born on July 9, 1968 to Earl and Iva Dell Law Roberts. She graduated from Davis County High School in 1986. On August 22, 1986, she married Dewey Coatney in Milton, Iowa. The couple lived in Troy for many years.

Carol worked at Davis County Hospital, Intellisell, Barkers in Keosauqua, Iowa for 12 years, and has spent the last 14 years working at Brothers Market (formerly Keith’s Foods) in Bloomfield. Her job allowed her to reconnect with many old friends and created many new and dear friendships. Carol loved to go to auctions and antiquing. She loved finding new stores she had never been to before hoping to find “treasures.” She had an extensive coffee can collection and was always looking for one she did not have. Carol had a soft spot for animals as was evident by the many that were brought into her home over the years. Carol enjoyed taking pictures and was always ready to capture any moment. In her family, Carol found her greatest pride and deepest joy. She was always there with advice when needed and somehow always knew exactly what to say. She will be forever missed by her family and friends.

Janice Louise “Jan” Huggins, 89, of Atkins, Iowa, passed away on August 13, 2026, in her home after a brief illness.

Jan was a loving soul who embraced life with kindness and compassion for all. She had a beautiful smile that was genuine and contagious. Her zest for life brought joy to those around her, and she was blessed with an enduring inner peace. If you spent more than a few minutes with Jan, undoubtedly your spirits were lifted. Additionally, you may well have heard her softly humming a happy tune.

Family was the center of Jan’s universe. There was nothing more important to her than caring for and supporting loved ones. This is a core value that Jan and Bill, her loving husband for 64 years, instilled in their children and grandchildren.

Jan’s unwavering support for her three sons and their families was immense and indisputable. She was a passionate and loyal fan, attending literally thousands of athletic competitions over the years. Jan used to joke – somewhat – that she married Bill because she wanted to have athletic children. Jan also loved encouraging her family as they expressed themselves through musical and artistic endeavors.

A long-time auxiliary member of the VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids, Jan served as treasurer for the Auxiliary Board. She was actively involved in many activities. Herbert William Truitt, 81, of Troy, Iowa passed away on August 6, 2026, at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua, Iowa. He was born on July 9, 1945, in Muscatine, Iowa to William Herbert and Mary Maxine Bailey Truitt. He married Bonnie Archer on December 24, 1965, in Troy, Iowa.

Herbert drove a truck for Troy Elevator for 25 years then became an over-the-road driver for several years until his retirement in 2005. He loved being on his Harley Davidson and going to bike rallies to socialize with friends. He was a member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa, District 14. Herbert also loved spending time with his family and spoiling his dogs. He liked watching football, especially the Green Bay Packers. He will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Truitt; two sons, Nathan (Stefan) Truitt of Niobrara, Nebraska, Nolan (Danelle) Truitt of Libertyville, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jack, Olivia, Brexden Truitt; and two siblings, Judy Archer, David Truitt both of Muscatine, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Patricia White, Joyce Scott, and Larry Ellis.

Herbert’s wish was to be cremated. Burial will be at the Troy Cemetery at a later date. A celebration of life will follow the burial. A memorial has been established to his family and may be mailed to: Herbert Truitt Memorial, Wagler Funeral Home, 304 W. Jefferson St., Bloomfield, Iowa 52537.

Donna Earlene Luko, 87, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on July 27, 2026, at the Bloomfield Care Center. She was born on October 5, 1938, in rural Bloomfield, Iowa to Earl Kenneth and Marjorie Ellen Stevig Trachsel. She graduated from Pulaski High School with the class of 1956. On September 2, 1956, she married Clinton Hutchings, they were divorced in 1981. On June 16, 2001, she married David Luko in Bloomfield.

Donna was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church where she served as Deacon for many years. She was a member of Chapter B PEO, a 50-year-member of Rose Chapter #552 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron’s Club, National Active and Retired Federal Employees, and her card club.

Donna was employed by the Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia; the Gilfillan Clinic with Dr. Harry Mahannah in Bloomfield; and she retired from the USDA Farm Service Agency in Bloomfield after 24 years of service.

She enjoyed walking, baking, and reading. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She attended many of their school and sports events over the years.

Donna also enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states including trips to Canada and Mexico. Donna and Dave spent the month of January in Scottsdale, Sedona, and Phoenix, Arizona for 15 years. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching them.

Dwayne Edwin Smith, 85, of rural Bloomfield, Iowa passed away July 26, 2026, at home. He was born February 23, 1941, at home in Bloomfield to Forrest W. and Gail Belle Conner Smith. He lived in Davis County most of his life. Dwayne married Margaret A. Lundstrum on June 16, 1963. The couple lived in an apartment in Ottumwa, Iowa for two years until Dwayne came home one night after work and Margaret said, “You must take this country girl back to the farm, I can’t take this city life!” The couple soon moved to the farm where they resided for 61 years.

Dwayne farmed while working for John Deere Ottumwa Works. He retired from John Deere after 30 years of service but continued to run his farm. He had a great love of being a farmer; raising cattle, working the land, raising crops, putting up hay, he truly enjoyed the hard work of farming. For sport, Dwayne enjoyed snowmobiling out west. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

John Robert Murrell, 86, of Bloomfield, Iowa, passed away after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease and its complications on July 25, 2026, at the Bloomfield Care Center. He was born on August 17, 1939, in Lancaster, Missouri, to Evans and Cleo Murrell. John married the love of his life, Jenive (Helen) Northup, and they shared a wonderful life through 68 years of marriage together. Helen devotedly stood by his side until his last day.

In 1961, John started working at Hamilton Produce in Bloomfield. Six years later, he opened and managed the Hamilton-McVey Feed & Grain Elevator. Eventually, he bought Mr. McVey’s portion of the company and formed a long-lasting partnership with Lowell Hamilton. In 1991, they sold Hamilton-Murrell Feed & Grain Elevator but continued their partnership, along with his son Raymond, at Hamilton Produce. John retired in 2019, completing a very successful and rewarding 58 years as a manager, businessman, and store owner. Throughout his career, he developed close personal relationships with multi-generation farmers and was a respected member of the community, even after retirement.

John was loved by many for his kindness, generosity, and quiet demeanor, but that’s not to say he couldn’t spin a tale or two. JoAnn O. McClurg, 93, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on July 24, 2026, at Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa. She was born January 16, 1933, in rural Davis County, Iowa to Joseph and Eva (Birchmier) Barker. She married Harlin Max McClurg January 21, 1948, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He passed away November 8, 1992.

JoAnn was a homemaker and, over the years, cleaned several houses in Davis County. Her most important job was being caregiver to her son, Marty, after an accident left him paralyzed in 1984. They enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo. She cared for him at home for 34 years until he passed away in July 2018. JoAnn enjoyed her weekly phone calls with her niece, Connie Moyer, and good friend, Delilah Morrow. She also enjoyed outings with Megan to the Dutchman Store, Dollar General, Walmart, McDonalds, KFC, and Burlington to the Casino when her health allowed.

Esther Louise (Allen) Hurley, 90, passed away at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Missouri on July 22, 2026. She was born June 18, 1936, the daughter of John C. “Jack” and Ethel (Post) Allen in Centerville, Iowa. She attended Moulton School for twelve years, graduating in 1953. She attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

In 1954, she married Vernon Moore and to this union their daughter, Barbara Joan, was born. They later divorced. On November 30, 1962, she married Norman Kenneth Hurley in Columbia, Missouri. He later adopted Barbara.

Esther worked in the Appanoose County Auditor's office for 18 years and retired as Moulton City Clerk after twelve years of service. In later years, Esther worked as a secretary at Elliott Tax office in Centerville, Iowa. She also worked as a travel agent for Mid Missouri Travel of Lancaster, Missouri then for Sho Me Tours of Atlanta, Missouri and also escorted tour groups.

Esther was a member of First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa. She was a past president of P.E.O. and Centerville BPW Club, and a 50-year member of Centerville O.E.S. She was also a member of several area quilt guilds and the Angus Auxiliary – both at the local and state level.

Betty May Wilkinson, 87, of Casa Grande, Arizona passed away on July 12, 2026, at Copper Sky Assisted Living in Casa Grande. She was born on May 11, 1939, in Terre Haute, Illinois to Jacob Dale and Grace May Hardisty Neff. She married Harley Wilkinson on October 25, 1969, in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple have resided in Arizona full time since 2007.

Betty was a homemaker for most of her life; family was very important to her. She loved playing all kinds of card games but Pinochle was her specialty. She also enjoyed bowling, gardening, playing shuffleboard, and traveling. Betty completed a lifelong goal of visiting all 50 states. While Betty and Harley lived in Minnesota, they were active members of the Newburg United Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her husband, Harley; three children, Craig Bush of Monticello, Illinois, D.J. (Linda) Thommen of Salem, Oregon, Brenda (Dave) Helgeson or Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Jeff Bush, Stephen Wilkinson; daughter-in-law, Patti Bush; and a brother, Robert Neff.

Graveside services will be held at noon on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Pulaski Cemetery with Pastor Kramer Smith officiating. Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
