If your skin breaks out around your period, it makes sense to wonder whether your hormones are involved. They certainly can be. But “hormonal acne” is often the beginning of the conversation.

Your hormones function within a larger system, and one part I pay close attention to is your nervous system.

Your stress response can influence oil production and worsen acne. That’s why I want to understand what life feels like in your body. Are you sleeping well? Do you feel constantly on edge? Is there room in your day to rest, or are you pushing through until bedtime?

I also ask about your menstrual cycle, digestion, nutrition, medications, and skincare. Those details help me understand which factors may be relevant for you and whether further evaluation would be useful.

This isn’t about telling you to “just relax.” Acne can be painful, frustrating, and emotionally exhausting. Being told to manage your stress without meaningful support can feel like one more responsibility.

My approach is to make room for that whole experience and build a plan around it. That may include care directed at your skin, evaluating hormonal concerns, and supporting sleep, nutrition, and your response to stress.

At Whole Systems Healthcare in Boulder, I want you to understand the reasoning behind your care and feel supported along the way. Your skin deserves attention, and so does the person living in it.

You remove a food and feel a little better. Then something else seems to bother you. Over time, your list of foods to avoid grows, and eating becomes increasingly complicated.
When that happens, I want to ask a deeper question: What is making your digestive system so reactive in the first place?
One part of that conversation that deserves more attention is your nervous system. It helps regulate digestion and communicates with the immune system in your gut. When your body spends a lot of time in a state of heightened alert, that can affect digestive function and sensitivity.
This is why my approach goes beyond identifying foods that trigger symptoms. I also want to understand the conditions under which your body is trying to digest them. Are you rushing through meals? Is your body tense even when you have time to rest? How are you sleeping? What demands are you carrying throughout the day?
Those questions belong in a digestive health conversation.
When nervous system activity is contributing to symptoms, removing foods alone may leave that contributor unaddressed. Dietary changes can provide relief, but I also want to work toward helping your digestive system function more comfortably.
Some conditions require specific food avoidance, and we respect those needs. Where it is medically appropriate, though, the goal is a nourishing, varied diet that you can enjoy with greater confidence.
At Whole Systems Healthcare in Boulder, I look at digestive health within the larger picture of your health and life. Your treatment plan should help us understand why symptoms are happening and what we can do about them.

You don't have to be sick to take your health seriously.

We often think of healthcare as something we need when something goes wrong.

You develop a symptom.
You get sick.
You get injured.
A lab comes back abnormal.

Then you go to the doctor.

But there's another side of healthcare that we care deeply about at Whole Systems Healthcare:

Helping you stay healthy.

You can talk with your doctor about your sleep before you're exhausted.

You can work on strength and mobility before movement becomes difficult.

You can pay attention to stress before you feel completely depleted.

You can think about nutrition, metabolic health, hormones, cardiovascular health, and healthy aging before there's a diagnosis to manage.

You don't have to wait for your body to give you a reason to start caring for it.

Preventive care is one of the reasons we believe having an ongoing relationship with a holistic doctor can be so valuable.

Sometimes the best time to work on your health is when you're already feeling pretty good.

DOCTOR'S THOUGHTS

Why can two people with the same diagnosis need very different approaches?

Because we don't treat diagnoses. We treat people.

Take insomnia as an example.

Two people can both walk into my office saying, "I can't sleep," but their experiences may be completely different.

One person can't fall asleep.

Another falls asleep easily but wakes up at 2:00am every morning.

Someone else wakes several times because they need to use the bathroom.

Another person wakes up once, but their mind immediately turns on and they can't fall back asleep.

All of these people might be given the same diagnosis: insomnia.

But are they actually experiencing the same thing?

This is where I think holistic medicine becomes really interesting.

Instead of immediately asking, "What can I give this person for sleep?" I want to understand the pattern.

When did this start?
Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep?
What time do you wake up?
What wakes you?
What happens when you wake up?
How do you feel during the day?
What else is happening in your health and your life?

Each answer gives us another clue about what's happening physiologically.

And that's why I don't know exactly what I'm going to recommend before a patient walks through my door.

Sometimes a medication may be appropriate. Sometimes a supplement like magnesium or L-theanine may be helpful. But simply replacing a sleep medication with a "natural" sleep aid isn't necessarily holistic medicine.

This is referred to as green allopathy: using a natural substance to suppress a symptom without changing the way we're thinking about the person.

Holistic medicine asks a different question:

Why is THIS person experiencing THIS symptom in THIS particular way?

That's where individualized care begins.

Same diagnosis. Different person. Different approach.

ASK A BOULDER HOLISTIC DOCTOR

Do I need a naturopathic doctor if I already have a primary care provider?

Yes. In fact, I encourage my patients to have both.

Your primary care provider plays an incredibly important role in your healthcare. They're often your first point of contact within the conventional medical system and can help coordinate things like medications, imaging, referrals, screenings, and specialist care.

A naturopathic doctor can bring something different to your healthcare team.

Here in Colorado, I like to think of my role almost like a specialist—not a specialist in one particular disease or organ system, but a specialist in holistic medicine.

My job is to step back and look at you as a whole person.

That means we're not only asking, "Do you have a disease that needs to be treated?"

We're also asking:

How well are you sleeping?
How is your energy?
How are you managing stress?
How are your nervous, digestive, endocrine, and immune systems functioning?
Are your daily habits supporting your health?
And what can we do now to help you stay healthy in the years ahead?

Naturopathic medicine can be especially valuable for people living with chronic health concerns, as well as people who simply want to be proactive about their health.

I don't see this as choosing between conventional and holistic medicine.

I think there's tremendous value in having both on your healthcare team.

Your P*P can help you navigate the conventional medical system, while your naturopathic doctor can provide another perspective with more time devoted to prevention, health promotion, lifestyle medicine, and whole-person care.

Different roles. Different strengths. One healthcare team.

What happens when you see us for the first time?

Your first visit at Whole Systems Healthcare isn't a rushed appointment.

It's a conversation.

We want to understand what brought you in, but we also want to understand the bigger picture of your health.

We'll talk about your current concerns, health history, medications and supplements, nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, digestion, energy, and other areas that may be important to your health.

If you've had previous labs, imaging, or medical records, we can review those too.

But just as importantly, we want to know:

What are you hoping to get out of your healthcare?

Some people come to us after struggling with a chronic health concern for years.

Others feel pretty good and want to stay that way.

And some simply want a doctor who has enough time to listen, answer questions, and help them make thoughtful decisions about their health.

From there, we work together to determine the next steps.

That could include nutrition or lifestyle recommendations, botanical medicine, supplements, acupuncture, additional testing, coordination with another healthcare provider, or sometimes simply starting with a few manageable changes.

You won't leave with recommendations just for the sake of giving you something to do.

The goal is to create a plan that makes sense for you.

That's what relationship-based healthcare looks like to us.

DOCTOR'S THOUGHTS

Health is more than the absence of disease.

One thing I wish more people understood about their health is that not having a diagnosed disease doesn't necessarily mean you're truly healthy.

Our medical system is very good at identifying and treating disease. And we absolutely need that.

But there's another side of medicine that I don't think we talk about enough: How do we actually cultivate health?

Our bodies have an incredible capacity for repair and regeneration. Every day, and especially while we sleep, the body is doing an enormous amount of work to maintain and restore itself.

So one of the questions I often think about as a holistic doctor isn't simply, "How do we stop disease?"

It's also, "What does this person need to become healthier?"

That might mean looking at sleep, movement, nutrition, stress, relationships, nervous system health, time outside, purpose, connection, or other parts of everyday life that influence our health.

And this brings me to something else I wish more people knew:

Supplements are only a small piece of the puzzle.

I think it's easy for holistic medicine to fall into the same trap as conventional medicine: believing the answer to our health always exists somewhere outside of us.

Instead of another prescription, it becomes another supplement.

Supplements can absolutely be useful. I recommend them in my practice. But they're generally there to support physiology, not to create health on their own.

So much of health comes back to how we live.

Sometimes the most powerful medicine isn't in a bottle.

It's getting outside. Moving your body. Sleeping deeply. Eating nourishing food. Feeling connected to other people. Learning how to regulate stress. And creating a life that supports your health rather than constantly depleting it.

That's one of the things I love most about practicing holistic medicine.

We're not only asking how we can treat disease.

We're asking how we can help someone become healthier.

ASK A BOULDER HOLISTIC DOCTOR

When should I see a holistic doctor?

I tend to think about this in two groups: people who are dealing with chronic health concerns and people who are generally healthy and want to stay that way.

If you're dealing with an emergency or an acute medical issue, conventional medicine is often exactly where you want to be. That's one of the places our healthcare system really shines.

But chronic health concerns are different.

When someone has been dealing with fatigue, digestive issues, chronic pain, hormonal concerns, poor sleep, or other ongoing symptoms, there is often value in having a doctor who has the time to look at the bigger picture.

And you don't have to wait until something is wrong.

One of my favorite roles as a holistic doctor is actually helping people stay healthy.

Our bodies are constantly balancing processes of breakdown and regeneration. When that balance starts shifting over time, we may begin moving away from health long before we're diagnosed with a disease.

Holistic and naturopathic medicine give us an opportunity to check in along the way. How are you sleeping? How is your nervous system doing? Your hormones? Digestion? Immune health? Energy? What has changed since we last saw you?

I often compare it to going to the dentist.

Most of us don't wait until we have a terrible toothache to see a dentist. We go regularly because we want to keep our teeth healthy.

Why shouldn't we approach the rest of our health the same way?

I believe almost everyone can benefit from having a holistic doctor as part of their healthcare team, whether you're trying to regain your health or simply want to protect it for years to come.

One of the biggest misconceptions about health is that change has to happen all at once.

In our experience, lasting health is usually built one step at a time.

One better night's sleep.

One nourishing meal.

One new habit.

One meaningful conversation.

Those small moments accumulate over weeks and months into something much bigger.

That's one reason we love practicing relationship-based medicine. We get to walk alongside our patients as those changes unfold.

If you're looking for a holistic healthcare clinic in Boulder, Colorado, we'd be honored to be part of your journey.
