๐Ÿง  Did You Know? Your Brain Plays a HUGE Role in How You Move!

Your brain is one of the bodyโ€™s most complex organs, playing a central role in movement, coordination, balance, posture, and even how you experience pain!

๐Ÿ’ช Every step you take and every time you maintain your balance, your brain is constantly processing information and communicating with your muscles and nervous system.

๐Ÿง  Through a process called neuroplasticity, your brain can adapt and strengthen neural connections as you learn and practice movements.

Physical therapy isnโ€™t just about strengthening muscles! It can also help improve the communication and coordination between your brain and body, allowing you to move more efficiently and confidently.

Better movement starts with teamwork between your brain and body!

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ How Fast You Walk May Reveal More About Your Health Than You Think!

Did you know that your usual walking speed can be an indicator of overall health and even life expectancy?

Research has shown that individuals who walk at faster comfortable speeds tend to have better physical function and longer life expectancy, particularly as they age.

๐Ÿ’ก Why? Walking requires your muscles, heart, lungs, brain, and nervous system to work together. Your walking speed can reflect how well these systems are functioning!

The good news? Strength, balance, and walking ability can all be improved with exercise and physical therapy!

Remember, walking speed is just one piece of the puzzle, not a prediction of how long youโ€™ll live.

Every step counts. Keep moving and accelerate your recovery!

๐Ÿง  Did You Know? Pain Isnโ€™t Always Felt Where the Problem Starts!

Have you ever experienced pain in one area of your body, only to find out the source may be somewhere else? This is known as referred pain!

๐Ÿ” What is referred pain?
Referred pain occurs when pain is felt in a different location from where it originates. This happens because the nervous system can sometimes interpret pain signals from one area as coming from another.

๐Ÿ’ก Common Examples:
๐Ÿ’ช Shoulder Pain: Certain neck conditions can cause pain that is felt in the shoulder or arm.

๐Ÿฆต Hip Pain: Problems involving the hip joint can sometimes cause pain around the knee.

๐Ÿ”™ Back Pain: Certain structures in the lower back can produce pain felt in the buttocks or thighs.

How Can Physical Therapy Help?
Physical therapists assess your movement, strength, mobility, and symptoms to help identify potential sources of musculoskeletal pain and develop an individualized treatment plan.

โœจ Remember: Where you feel pain isnโ€™t always where itโ€™s coming from!

๐Ÿšจ LOW BACK PAIN: KNOW THE RED FLAGS! ๐Ÿšจ

Not all low back pain is created equal! While most cases of back pain can be managed conservatively, certain symptoms may indicate a more serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.

โš ๏ธ Red Flags to Watch For:

๐Ÿ”ด Saddle Anesthesia: Numbness or tingling around the groin, inner thighs, or buttocks (areas that would touch a saddle).

๐Ÿ”ด Bowel or Bladder Changes: New loss of bowel or bladder control, difficulty starting urination, or inability to urinate.

๐Ÿ”ด Progressive Weakness: New or worsening weakness in one or both legs, especially if it affects walking.

๐Ÿ”ด Severe Pain After Trauma: Back pain following a significant fall, accident, or injury.

๐Ÿ”ด Fever or Unexplained Weight Loss: Back pain accompanied by fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss may indicate an underlying medical condition.

๐Ÿšจ IMPORTANT: New saddle numbness, bowel or bladder dysfunction, or rapidly worsening leg weakness can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, a serious condition requiring emergency medical evaluation.

๐Ÿฅ If you experience these symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait for a physical therapy appointment.

At Accel Physical Therapy, we believe understanding your symptoms is an important part of staying healthy and active!

Listen to your body. Know the warning signs. Stay informed!

Accelerate Your Recovery! ๐Ÿ’ช

Did you know that recovery goes beyond physical therapy? What you do outside of your PT sessions plays a big role in how your body heals and performs!

Here are a few simple ways to support your recovery:

๐Ÿ’ง Stay Hydrated โ€“ Drinking enough water supports muscle function, circulation, and tissue health.

๐Ÿฅ— Fuel Your Body โ€“ Eating nutritious, balanced meals provides the nutrients your body needs to repair and rebuild.

๐Ÿ˜Œ Manage Stress โ€“ Limiting stress and making time to relax can help support your bodyโ€™s recovery process.

๐Ÿ˜ด Prioritize Sleep โ€“ Quality sleep is essential for muscle repair, tissue healing, and overall recovery.

๐Ÿšถ Keep Moving โ€“ Active recovery, such as walking, gentle stretching, and low-impact exercise, promotes circulation and helps reduce stiffness.

๐Ÿ’ช Stay Consistent โ€“ Following your physical therapy home exercise program helps build strength, improve mobility, and maintain progress!

โœจ Recovery doesnโ€™t stop when you leave the clinic! Small, healthy habits can make a big difference in helping you reach your goals.

๐Ÿ’ช Movement Monday: Know Your Rotator Cuff!

Did you know your rotator cuff is made up of FOUR muscles that help keep your shoulder strong and stable?

Supraspinatus: Helps lift your arm out to the side.

Infraspinatus: Helps rotate your arm outward.

Teres Minor: Assists with outward rotation and shoulder stability.

Subscapularis: Helps rotate your arm inward.

Together, these muscles help stabilize your shoulder during everyday activities like reaching overhead, lifting, throwing, and getting dressed!

โœจ Why is this important?
Keeping your rotator cuff strong can improve shoulder function, support joint stability, and reduce your risk of injury.

At Accel Physical Therapy, we can help you improve shoulder strength, mobility, and function so you can keep doing the activities you love!
