At Lakeland EMS, we know some of the toughest calls don't end when the scene is cleared. The things first responders see and carry can stay with us long after the sirens are silent.
PTSD can affect anyone-patients, families, and first responders alike. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and no one should carry the weight alone.
To every EMT, paramedic, dispatcher, firefighter, police officer, healthcare worker, and community member navigating invisible wounds: you are seen, you are supported, and you are never alone.

Alongside BTFD, BTPD, Byram Township Government Officials, and our residents, we paused to remember those who have given service to their community over the years and are no longer with us. BLS units 4351, 4353, 4355, and SSU 4359 proudly represented in today’s parade.

Prior to the parade, BLS4353 and SSU4359 were at the Andover Borough Memorial Day Ceremony.

During both remembrances, the duty crew was called away for a pending emergency.

Lakeland EMS regrets to announce the passing of Life Member Arthur “Artie” Schikschneit. Art joined the Department approximately 30 years ago and served as an EMT, Rescue Member, Sergeant, and Trustee during his active time with us. He dutifully responded with Lakeland during the tragic events of 9/11, and also served with our friends at Hopatcong Ambulance Squad prior to joining Lakeland. Rest peacefully, Artie. Thank you for your decades of service to the Department and to your community. We will miss you, friend.

In lieu of arrangements in the short term, we will remember Art with a last call broadcast tomorrow (Saturday) shortly after 12:00PM for those who would like to listen in remotely or you may join us by gathering at our HQ in Byram.

A single image can capture a moment so devastating, no words could ever fully explain.

At approximately 3:45 PM, the Hopatcong Police Department was dispatched to a structure fire at OSCAR (One Step Closer Animal Rescue) located on Stanhope-Sparta Road in Hopatcong.

Upon arrival, officers from the Hopatcong Police Department and Stanhope Police Department encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions. Despite the intense and dangerous circumstances, responders along with courageous OSCAR staff members, employees from Lakeside Construction, and nearby bystanders acted swiftly and selflessly to rescue the majority of the animals prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, 37 dogs were safely rescued. Tragically, 6 dogs perished in the fire.

This was truly a coordinated team effort. We extend our sincere gratitude to the following agencies for their assistance and support during this incident:

• Stanhope Police Department
• Byram Township Police Department
• Sparta Police Department
• Netcong Police Department
• Hopatcong Fire Department
• Netcong Borough Fire Department

As well as the many additional agencies and individuals who answered our call for assistance and stood by in support.

Please keep the animals, rescue staff, and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.
