For Samantha Huge, breast cancer has always been personal.

She lost her mother to the disease at just 4 years old. Nearly 50 years later, she heard the words she never expected: “You have breast cancer.”

This time, expert care was close to home at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Today, as a survivor and member of the MUSC Foundation team, Samantha is helping shape the future of cancer care for patients and families across South Carolina.

Take a peek at the future of cancer care in South Carolina.

Opening in 2030, South Carolina’s first dedicated cancer hospital will bring comprehensive cancer care and support together in one place.

For the first time, patients in our state will have access to proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation treatment, without traveling out of state. The hospital will also bring South Carolina’s first intraoperative MRI, giving surgeons detailed images during surgery to help guide treatment.

Allison Hopkins Prey never expected a routine breast reduction surgery to lead to a cancer diagnosis.

Doctors discovered Stage 1 triple-negative breast cancer during her procedure, beginning a journey that included chemotherapy, radiation, and an outpouring of support from her care team, family, friends, and community.

Today, Allison is paying that love forward by helping create a future where more patients and families have access to the care and support they need.

Adam Enggasser, M.D., knew he wanted to be a doctor from the time he walked the halls of his elementary school.

Today, that dream is a reality for Adam, a 2026 College of Medicine () graduate, thanks in part to generous donors who contributed to scholarships.

Research breakthroughs often begin with persistence and the support to keep going, especially when setbacks happen. Sometimes that support looks like donor-funded scholarship opportunities that help push research forward.💙

At MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, Dr. Rachel Burge’s research is helping uncover why pancreatic tumors behave differently, advancing the pursuit of more personalized cancer treatment.

When 3-year-old Luke Strong needed proton therapy to treat a rare cancer, his family had to travel hundreds of miles away to Florida to get it. MUSC Health is building a new cancer hospital in Charleston that will bring this specialized radiation treatment to South Carolina for the first time, giving families like Luke’s access to this care closer to home.
