“Tanning beds are in the same cancer-causing category as asbestos and plutonium,” she said in the video, adding that using one before age 35 increases your risk for melanoma by 75 percent. “That’s 7-5”

“Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, yet it’s also one of the most preventable. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and having five or more sunburns doubles someone’s risk for melanoma.”

Dermatologists are flummoxed.

“The ACOG schedule recommends pregnant people receive flu and Covid shot shots in the autumn, though it notes vaccination can occur at any point in the year. Tdap can also be given at any point in the year; the RSV vaccine for pregnant people is recommended for the period from September to January of any given RSV season.

Laura Riley, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, said ACOG’s recommendations were needed to clear up a situation that has become murky. She noted vaccinating against Covid during pregnancy not only protects the pregnant person, but also newborns, since they are too young to be vaccinated immediately after birth.”

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has released a recommended vaccine schedule during pregnancy, one that diverges from CDC guidance.

As of Tuesday, June 9th, the Buckingham County measles outbreak has increased to 84 reported cases in the Piedmont region of the state. 93% of those cases are in people who are unvaccinated, 5% have no records. Only 2% are in vaccinated individuals.

There are still ZERO cases in our Blue Ridge District (including Albemarle and Charlottesville). This is largely due to good herd immunity in our area. Kudos to all those who are fully immunized - you are protecting yourselves as well as all those around you.

But we must not remain complacent - please contact your pediatrician if your child needs doses to comply with the accelerated MMR vaccine schedule that we are using during this outbreak. VDH recommends an early MMR dose for infants 6 months to under 12 months. For those 12 months and older, full protection against measles means 2 doses of MMR vaccine at least 28 days between the two doses.

Piedmont Pediatrics patients - please call us at 434-975-7777 if your child needs an early or extra MMR vaccine. 💙💚

On this National Gun Violence Awareness Day, all of us at Piedmont Pediatrics remind parents to keep any guns in the home locked, with ammunition unloaded and locked separately. Because kids (teens in particular) can find keys, we ask that gun safes are fitted with combination or biometric locks.

As of Tuesday, June 2nd, the Buckingham County measles outbreak has increased to 55 reported cases in the Piedmont region of the state. 97% of those cases are in people who are unvaccinated or have no records. Fi****ms are now the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens under the age of 18. Research shows that having fi****ms in the home increases the risk of unintentional shootings, su***de and homicide. The safest home for kids is one without guns, but if you do decide to keep guns in your home, make sure that all guns are locked and unloaded, with ammunition locked and stored separately.
