Hi ladies. If you have been researching l***aplasty, you have probably come across the Barbie doll trim, and the name makes it sound like the best one. It is not.
I get asked about this constantly, so I want to walk you through what actually happens to the tissue in the three most common l***a minora reduction techniques.
The Barbie doll trim cuts straight across both sides. That removes the natural thinning at the edge and the natural color transition your anatomy already has. When patients come to me later wanting that appearance changed, my options are limited. Tissue that has been removed cannot be added back.
The wedge technique is a real improvement. It keeps continuity, it keeps the natural edge, and the nerve endings are not touched. The challenge is the bulging where the tissue is rejoined, and that part has to be done precisely.
The technique I use is the modified inferior crescent wedge. Straight incision at the bottom, crescent shape at the top. The natural edge stays intact, the nerve endings are not touched, and the natural thinning and color are preserved.
So please do not be fooled by the name. Ask your surgeon which technique they use, and ask what happens to the edge.
