Smile lines are the most requested filler at New You Chicago, and the one I almost never treat first.

Patients walk in and point to the lines that run from the nose to the mouth and ask me to fill them. Filling those folds alone makes the lower face look heavy. A face needs a foundation first, like a house. Restore the cheek and the whole area lifts, which is usually the look you were hoping for.

I never push volume. We treat in stages and plan the next step from how your face responds, and you can go as slowly as you like. Sometimes I talk patients out of things, and overfilled lips are the most common example. If a treatment will not help you, I say so.

This patient came to us with painful, inflamed cystic acne across the cheek and jaw.

After a 6 month course of isotretinoin (the medication many people still call Accutane), the active breakouts cleared and the skin calmed down significantly.

Isotretinoin is a prescription oral medication for severe or stubborn acne that hasn’t responded to other treatments.

It works on oil production at the source, which is why it can help when creams and antibiotics haven’t.

It requires close monitoring, regular check-ins, and lab work, and results vary from patient to patient.

A few opinions I’ve held for years as a physician injector, and I’m not changing my mind on any of them.

1. Microneedling with PRP is the most underrated treatment on my menu. It works on texture, scarring, and overall skin quality, and the downtime is short. If you only do one treatment a year, make it this one.

2. The lip flip is the it girl right now, and it deserves it. Five to ten units of Botox roll the top lip out a little without adding any volume. It lasts around three months, so it’s an easy way to try a change without committing to filler.

3. The Botox dose your friend got tells me nothing about yours. Your muscles, your expressions, and how much movement you want to keep all decide the dose.

4. More filler won’t fix your skin’s quality. Filler restores volume, but texture, tone, and fine lines need a different plan, like microneedling, PRP, or medical-grade skincare.

5. Injectables work better on skin that’s cared for every single day. A good home routine with SPF, a vitamin C, and a retinol is what keeps your results looking their best between visits.

Most of these are fixable!

The sun is the big one. UV speeds up collagen breakdown whether you can see the sun or not

Sugar does damage through glycation, which stiffens the collagen you already have.

Side sleeping presses the same lines into your cheek and chin night after night until they stay.

The rest is about irritation. Harsh scrubs, products that sting, and sweat left sitting on the skin all keep it inflamed, and inflamed skin ages faster.

When your child spikes a fever, the first question is whether it can wait until morning or needs a doctor now. Dr. Beata Danek walks through how she answers that for parents.

If your baby is younger than 3 months, any fever means calling the doctor right away.

For older kids, a fever of 101 or even 102°F is a common response to a virus or a minor cold. You can give children's Tylenol or ibuprofen and watch for up to 24 hours. If the fever doesn't go away, bring them in.

A fever of 104°F needs a quicker response. That usually doesn't mean the ER, but you should call your child's doctor and ask whether to come in today or tomorrow.

The most reassuring sign is how your child acts once the medicine brings the fever down. If they're playing, smiling, and drinking (even if they're eating a little less), it's most likely not a serious infection. Call right away if the fever won't come down, your child is shaking with it, or they're sleepy and don't want to play.

This is general guidance, so call your doctor with any questions about your own child.
