Is it anxiety—or is your teen just built to process the world more deeply? 🧠✨
When a teen is easily overwhelmed, perfectionistic, quick to worry, or lying awake with a racing mind, it’s easy to assume it’s anxiety. But, it might actually be a highly sensitive temperament.
Here’s the difference:
Anxiety is our self-protective, threat-response system in overdrive. We need it to survive, but it can get stuck in high gear and become unhelpful.
Sensitivity is an innate trait—their brain simply absorbs and processes sensory and emotional data at a much higher volume.
When a sensitive teen doesn’t have the tools to manage that influx of information, it looks and feels like anxiety. But trying to “fix” or change their temperament usually backfires, adding a layer of shame that creates actual anxiety.
Symptoms of “anxiety” decrease when teens can learn to work WITH their temperament:
1️⃣ Less shame: “I’m not dramatic—my system just picks up and analyzes more data.”
2️⃣ Better pacing: Learning to honor sensory breaks and downtime before reaching emotional burnout.
3️⃣ Owning their strengths: Turning deep empathy, intuition, and creativity into their superpower.
When we teach teens to understand and honor their inner world, the “anxiety” naturally begins to settle. They don’t need to change who they are—they just need to learn how to navigate a noisy world as themselves. 🌿
