Alexandra Ramos has spent her career helping UI Health patients understand the importance getting a yearly mammogram to catch breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. So, when she turned 40 and became eligible for screenings herself, she knew it was time to practice what she preached.

What she never considered was that her first screening would reveal stage one breast cancer.

What followed was a whirlwind of appointments and treatments, which she says she couldn’t have gotten through without the expert guidance of her Breast Cancer Navigator and the seamlessness of her care at UI Health. And less than five months later, she was surrounded by family and coworkers to ring the bell and celebrate her triumph over breast cancer!

Her biggest advice this ?

Don’t let fear make the decision for you. Talk to your primary care provider about your breast cancer risk and ask about screening options. Your UI Health care team, including Alexandra, won’t leave you to navigate a diagnosis alone.
