According to new data from the CDC, New Jersey saw a 27% drop in overdose deaths in 2025, the lowest in five years. That decline outpaced the national average of 20%, and represents a drop of more than 50% compared to the peak of the pandemic in 2021.

That progress belongs to every person who chose recovery, every family that refused to give up, and every organization that kept showing up, even when the work was hard.

But as the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey reminds us, the work can't stop until that number reaches zero. Prevention, education, treatment access, and stigma reduction all have to continue.

Recovery has changed more in the last five years than in the previous twenty. In 2026, outpatient treatment isn't a backup plan or a lighter alternative. It's a primary, evidence-based path to healing that meets people inside their real lives, not outside of them.

That means staying connected to work, your family, and your community while building the tools that make recovery last. It means treating the whole person, not just the substance use, but the trauma, the mental health challenges, and the life that deserves to be rebuilt.

At Freedom House, this is exactly how we show up. Our Outpatient Services are built on trauma-informed, evidence-based care, and no one is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Because we believe access to care should never come down to a bank account.
