Milo’s housemate’s food looked like an innocent snack. Unfortunately, it contained medications that were toxic to Milo.

After accidentally eating the food, Milo arrived at MedVet Lexington extremely lethargic and behaving unusually. Our team determined he had ingested a toxic dose of a medication that can dangerously affect heart rate and blood pressure.

Milo was hospitalized for intensive care, including IV fluids, injectable medications, and continuous monitoring. He responded to treatment much faster than expected and was back to his normal kitten self the following day. Before heading home, he squeezed in a little lunch-break cuddle with one of our technicians. 🐱

Knowing when your pet needs emergency care can be difficult, especially when symptoms appear suddenly.

Dr. Julia Fincher, Emergency Medicine Veterinarian at MedVet Mandeville and MedVet New Orleans, shares some of the common signs that should be evaluated by an emergency team, including breathing changes, unexplained trauma, seizures, sudden weakness, trouble urinating, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, and bloating.

Every situation is different, and you know your pet better than anyone. If something feels wrong, it’s always worth reaching out to your veterinarian or emergency team for guidance.

From building confidence to strengthening communication skills and applying new knowledge in practice, our mentors get to witness that growth throughout the Emergency Clinician Mentorship Program (ECMP).

At MedVet, our ER mentors raise their hands to take on this role because they’re passionate about supporting the next generation of emergency clinicians. They’re equipped through Mentor Academy and supported throughout the experience by Mackenzie Ruehl, who is both an ECMP mentor and brings advanced educational training to the program.

Our mentors also have the autonomy to tailor the mentorship experience to each ER doctor trainee, with the support of the broader ECMP program behind them.

That’s a wrap on the IVECCS 2026! 🐾✨

We had a fantastic week in Savannah connecting with veterinary professionals, celebrating our colleagues and supporting the Emergency and Critical Care community.

A few highlights from the conference:

🎓 Connecting with students, interns and residents at our reception, where our caregivers had meaningful conversations with attendees, celebrated our travel award winners and enjoyed an incredible view of the river.

💙 Supporting DEI in veterinary medicine by sponsoring the DEI Happy Hour and helping close out the conference in support of initiatives that promote greater inclusion across our profession.

💼 Meeting the next generation of veterinary professionals at the Career Fair, where our Recruiting team connected with so many attendees exploring their next career opportunity.

🎤 Sharing knowledge and expertise with strong turnout for presentations from several MedVet speakers. Drs. Jay Gladden and Andrew Taylor even kicked off their 6:30 am session to a full room for their talk on preventing iatrogenic pneumothorax!

Sometimes, a second chance starts with one person choosing to help.

A Good Samaritan found Dobby as a senior stray, and rushed him to MedVet Dayton for evaluation, where our Emergency team discovered an a**l gland tumor that required surgery.

But Dobby's story didn't end there. The person who found him decided to officially adopt him and has continued to care for his other health needs, giving Dobby the love, comfort, and care he deserves in his golden years.

We're so grateful Dobby found his way to someone who was willing to give him the second chance he needed. 🐾

Meet Pete, a Blue Heeler mix whose cancer journey is a reminder of the importance of specialized veterinary care and ongoing monitoring.

At 9 years old, Pete was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on his nose, a challenging location that required a collaborative approach between our Medical Oncology and Surgery teams at MedVet New Orleans. After lymph node removal, electrochemotherapy, and chemotherapy, Pete’s mast cell tumor has not returned, and he continues to enjoy life with his family years later.

During his routine rechecks, our Oncology team also detected a new tumor early, allowing it to be treated before it caused any concerns.

Now 12 years old, Pete is still enjoying adventures, including plenty of hikes with his family. We’ve loved being part of his story and celebrating each milestone along the way. 💙

A day at the ranch looks a little different for our MedVet Mandeville Dermatology team. 🐴

Dr. Steve Lemarie and Veterinary Technicians Brittany and Dawn recently visited Ricochet Ranch to allergy test two horses, Sam the Bay and Kate the Blue Roan, with Dr. Allison Barca.

And, of course, no ranch visit is complete without a supervisor. Trick the Border Collie was happy to oversee the whole operation. 🐶
