Providing exceptional care starts with understanding the unique needs and experiences of every patient. 💙
Family medicine residents and medical students participated in a hands-on training designed to improve care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), through a partnership with Special Olympics Connecticut and the Danbury Hospital Harold A. Spratt Center for Simulation and Clinical Learning.
Special Olympics health messengers acted as patients as the residents and students assessed them during an office visit. 🩺
"The training gave me insight into the perspective and preferences of Special Olympics athletes. It helped me improve my communication skills, approach sensitive topics more thoughtfully and provide more patient-centered, compassionate care for individuals with special needs." — Maria Piatac, MD, PGY1, Family Medicine Resident Physician, New Milford Hospital
A big thank you to all the participants for helping our residents, students and future patients who will all benefits from this important training! 👏🏽
