ACUPUNCTURE AND AUTOIMMUNITY

In case you missed it, last year’s winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine identified why your immune system sometimes attacks your own body. With time, this discovery will redirect medical research in preventing, treating, and hopefully curing autoimmune conditions.

In the meantime, “Randomized controlled studies support the use of acupuncture in rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease and in Sjogren's syndrome. Some evidence indicates that acupuncture may be beneficial as a symptomatic treatment for multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis."

ACUPUNCTURE AND OSTEOPOROSIS

“There is accumulating evidence to support the beneficial role of acupuncture in preserving bone quality and relieving clinical symptoms based on clinical and preclinical investigations… The underlying mechanisms behind the benefits of acupuncture may be linked with the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (adrenal) axis and activation of the Wnt/β-catenin and OPG/RANKL/RANK signaling pathways.”

[Wnt/β-catenin and OPG/RANKL/RANK signaling pathways are cellular networks that strictly control bone remodeling, balancing bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts.]

The study, Acupuncture Increases Parasympathetic Tone, Modulating Heart Rate Variability, examined whether acupuncture affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls automatic body functions such as heart rate and relaxation. Researchers analyzed 9 randomized controlled trials comparing real acupuncture with placebo (sham) acupuncture. The results suggested that real acupuncture may increase parasympathetic activity, which helps the body enter a more relaxed, “rest and digest” state.

It’s golden rain tree season and seasonal allergies are on the rise. Have you tried acupuncture for your sinus pressure and postnasal drip?

This article, “Acupuncture for allergic rhinitis: a systemic review and meta-analysis,” published in the April 2022 issue of European Journal of Medical Research, examined whether acupuncture can help people with allergic rhinitis, which causes symptoms such as sneezing, a runny or stuffy nose, and itchy eyes. Researchers reviewed 30 randomized controlled trials involving 4,413 participants. They found that acupuncture may improve nasal symptoms and quality of life in adults compared with receiving no treatment or sham acupuncture. While acupuncture did not clearly outperform common allergy medications, at our clinic we often see patients who experience significant improvement in rhinitis symptoms, resulting in a reduction of OTC medication use.

This peer-reviewed article published in the May 2023 edition of medical journal “Fertility and Sterility” discusses the effectiveness of using acupuncture for endometrial pain. In a trial of 106 women with endometriosis, acupuncture reduced menstrual pain and improved mood and quality of life more than sham acupuncture after 12 weeks of treatment. The sham acupuncture performed consisted of needling patients on “non-acupuncture points”. Participants were randomly assigned to acupuncture or sham acupuncture at multiple treatment centers; several aspects of pain and well-being were measured, including menstrual pain, non-menstrual pelvic pain, and psychological well-being. Unfortunately, the sample was relatively small and participants were not followed long-term. Link to article in first comment.
