Meet Dr. Meghan Young, the newest member of the Broadlawns Pediatrics team.

Dr. Young grew up surrounded by medicine. Her mom, grandmother, and aunts are nurses, as her own childhood care inspired her to become a pediatrician.

She also has a special interest in foster care and has served as a foster parent with her husband.

“We like to help any way we can. Foster children and families face unique challenges and needs,” she said.

As families prepare for a new school year, Dr. Young recommends gradually adjusting children’s schedules.

“It’s time to roll back those bedtime hours. Each week, go to bed 10-15 minutes earlier. It’s also important to keep your activity level up and think about nutrition and water intake,” she said.

For families visiting the Broadlawns Pediatrics for the first time, Dr. Young offers this reassurance:

“We have a wonderful clinic with great staff. Everyone here is ready and excited to take care of you. We know receiving care can be nerve-wracking at first, but we have a lot of resources available,” she said.

Dr. Young cares for patients with acute illnesses and chronic conditions, provides back-to-school physicals and supports patients’ mental health needs.

“We live in a time where mental health care is so important,” she said. “You are not alone. We would love to partner with you on your journey.”

Whether you’re riding a bike or scooter, skateboarding or skating, wearing a properly fitted helmet can help reduce the risk of serious head and brain injuries.

Before heading out on something with wheels:

• Choose a helmet designed for the activity
• Make sure it fits snugly and sits level on the head, covering the forehead
• Adjust the straps so the helmet stays securely in place
• Check for cracks, dents, or other signs of damage
• Replace a helmet after a crash or if it is damaged and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for when it should be replaced

Before your next outdoor adventure, take a minute to check your family’s helmets.

And remember; every ride starts with a helmet.

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming increasingly common in neighborhoods, on trails, and around town.

Before buying one for your family, make sure you understand what you’re purchasing. Some devices marketed as e-bikes can travel at much higher speeds and may not be legal or safe on public roads or trails.

The Iowa Department of Transportation has created a guide to help you compare devices, understand the rules, and find important information. Because regulations can vary by community, park or trail, riders should also check local rules before heading out.

In an emergency, would first responders know about an important medical condition if you couldn’t tell them?

Medical IDs can provide critical health information when a person is unable to communicate. Worn as a bracelet, necklace or main form of identification, they can alert first responders to information such as medical conditions, severe allergies or medications that may affect emergency care.

Medical Alert Awareness Month is a good time to consider whether a medical ID could be helpful for you or someone you care for. If you use one, make sure the information is accurate and up to date.

Beat the heat and stay cool this summer. Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to help your body regulate its temperature and function at its best.

Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Wear lightweight clothing, avoid direct sunlight, and limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.

Older adults, young children, and people who work outdoors may be at higher risk of dehydration and heat-related illness. Check on family, friends, and neighbors during periods of extreme heat.
