So many people find their way to somatics because of what they see in their feed. Catharsis. Big release. The promise of finally ridding themselves of the stuff they’ve been carrying.

And then they book a somatic experiencing session with me. We sit together. We talk. We track. We resource. We take our time.

And then they think, what the hell is this?! šŸ˜‚

I’m not going to pretend that this is fast work. That this is a quick fix. Or that such thing even exists.

Trauma happens when something is too much, too fast, too soon. The medicine is the opposite. Time. Space. Support.

A nervous system that has been formed by decades of difficult experiences cannot be reshaped in an hour.

So if you’re looking for something quick, I wish you the best of luck with that. āœŒļø

And if you’re looking for something that lasts, let’s talk about what gifts this work can offer you. ✨

Plants don’t rush.

They don’t compete.

They don’t doubt.

They’re resilient. Reliable. Steadfast. And always ready to show up for us.

Herbal Medicine teaches us that each season has its own plants, gifts, and unique medicine to offer. By following the rhythms and plants of each season, we give ourselves the opportunity to integrate the healing powers of plants back into our lives.

Join Nora Toomey, Clinical Herbalist of True Bloom, this Saturday for a journey into the medicine of summer. In this class, we will go over a handful of summertime plants, learn easy medicinal preparations, and inspire you to bring the medicine of summer into your daily routines!

Are you looking for a simple way to start working with your nervous system? Try this with me.

Look around your environment. Identify one cue of danger (something that makes you feel unsettled, edgy, activated, guarded, etc. even if you don’t know why) and one cue of safety (something that makes you feel present, at ease, relaxed, happy, neutral, or less bad) in your space.

Now tune into your body. Identify one cue of danger and one cue of safety within.

Finally, in the presence of another, identify one cue of safety and one cue of danger in that connection.

What do you notice? How do your mind and body react to that?

I know that may seem ridiculously simple. But here’s why it helps.

The nervous system is constantly scanning our internal and external landscapes for signs of danger, safety, and life threat through an unconscious process called neuroception.

This quick exercise brings conscious awareness to that unconscious process, which creates more choice. Since our nervous systems are shaped by our past experiences, we often find ourselves replaying old tapes, if you will. We brace even though there’s no real threat. We react in big ways to small things.

Pausing to notice cues of warning and welcome throughout the day can allow for greater discernment. In this moment, in this place, with these people, is this reaction appropriate?

And, when we start to build our own personal list of safety cues, we can be more intentional about adding those to our physical spaces or noticing them internally to create more ease.

This is one of many simple tools that I share in my Polyvagal Theory in Practice training. To learn more about this and other professional development trainings, send us a message. We’d love to connect.

PSA to energy healers out there! šŸ“£

Can we please stop ruining our clients’ post-session buzz with our energetic assessments?!

I’ve seen it so many times and experienced it myself. The language we use matters! Most clients will ask something along the lines of ā€œwhat did you notice?ā€ after a session. Now, I’m not suggesting you lie. But I am suggesting you phrase things in a way that supports curiosity and growth rather than shame and doubt. Check these two examples out.

ā€œYour heart was very stuck.ā€
ā€œThe energy in your heart felt noticeably different than other places in your body.ā€

Same feedback. Very different vibe. Which one would you rather receive?

Plus, so many people who ask for an assessment after a session are doing so because they’re used to looking outside themselves for answers or because they think we have some kind of magic that they don’t. So let’s stop feeding into that narrative and start redirecting them back toward themselves.

Ok? Ok!

Curious about Somatic Reiki? Here’s what actually happens in a session.

Clients get comfortable on the table or in a chair. I offer Reiki to help them settle in and anchor into ventral.

Then I guide clients through a somatic settling to help them connect with themselves and begin to notice their bodies.

We take time to identify and connect with resources that clients can come back to (things that feel good/neutral to notice).

Through client sharing and my tracking, we explore what comes up. This might sound like ā€œI feel a pit in my stomachā€ from the client or ā€œThe energy feels different in your right arm. What’s happening there?ā€ from me.

Using curiosity, imagery, small movements, sounding, and self-touch, we work with whatever arises (sensations, thoughts, emotions, memories, etc.).

We slow things down. Offer time and space for emotions to be felt, associations to be made, support to be felt, cycles to complete, and resources to emerge.

During the somatic work Reiki is flowing as a source of spiritual and nervous system support.

We finish the session with some ā€œregularā€ Reiki to help clients rest, process, and integrate the work.

If this sounds like something you’d like to explore, visit our website to schedule a session. Virtual and in-person options available.

For all my southern New England/NY friends!

I’ll be back at the very soon to offer Reiki II for mental health professionals. This class includes 7 continuing ed credits for those who qualify.

Together, we will explore distance and emotional healing techniques, Reiki for animals, using Reiki to manifest goals, scanning methods that can be used to determine where Reiki is needed, and more. Students will receive another attunement, learn Reiki symbols, and have the opportunity to practice giving Reiki to others using their new symbols and techniques.

Throughout the training we will discuss how the content applies to the mental health profession. Upon completion of this course, participants will be certified Reiki II practitioners.

Hope to see you there!

Don’t mind me. I’ll be over here with my fingers up my nose so I can get as much healing energy into my sinuses as possible.
