The Knauss Homestead

The Knauss Homestead was built in 1777 by Heinrich Knauss for his father, Moravian settler and founder of Emmaus, Sebastian Knauss.

On the National Register of Historic Places, it’s where the Lehigh Valley can gather and share their love of history. The Knauss Homestead was built in 1777 by Henry Knauss, son of Sebastian Henrich Knauss in Emmaus PA on land donated by Sebastian Heinrich Knauss.

A field of flax once flourished behind the Knauss Homestead, grown by the Knauss family as an important resource for everyday life. Its strong fibers could be transformed into linen, thread, rope, and other useful materials,with every part of the plant serving a purpose.

But how did a simple flax plant become the materials families relied on?

Come see for yourself at our 4th Annual Harvest Festival, where Richard Knauss Handcrafted, a descendant of the Knauss family, will bring this history to life through live demonstrations of the traditional process and craftsmanship behind flax and its many uses.

For nearly 250 years, this doorway has welcomed generations into the Knauss Homestead. 🗝

From family members and neighbors to students and visitors from around the world, every journey through the Homestead begins by turning this handle.

Today, the original front door and transom are in need of preservation to ensure this historic entrance remains safe, stable, and welcoming for generations to come.

Your gift will help restore the very doorway that has connected people to the Knauss Homestead since 1777, preserving an irreplaceable first impression of history for those who walk through it today, and those who will follow.
