Last Saturday morning in Cedar Falls, 10-year-old Ethan Williams set up a folding table at the end of his driveway.
But he wasn't selling lemonade.
Laid out carefully on that table: his Xbox with all his games. His mountain bike. His entire collection of Marvel action figures—some still in the box.
When neighbor Patricia Miller stopped her morning walk, she was confused. "Spring cleaning, sweetheart?"
Ethan's voice cracked. "No, ma'am. I need $500. The vet said Scout needs surgery on his leg by Monday or..." He couldn't finish the sentence.
Scout—a scruffy golden mix Ethan found three weeks ago limping through Riverside Park with a shattered back leg. The boy had begged his parents to help. They're good people, but between rent and his little sister's asthma medication, there just wasn't $500 lying around.
So Ethan made a choice.
For four hours, this fifth-grader sat in his driveway, watching strangers carry away pieces of his childhood. His face stayed strong, but his hands shook every time he handed over another treasure.
"I can play video games when I'm older," he told one buyer who seemed hesitant. "I can't save Scout later. He needs me now."
A customer snapped a photo of Ethan sitting alone at that table, his piggy bank filling up dollar by dollar. She posted it online with one line: "This is what love looks like."
What happened next restored my faith in humanity.
Within an hour, neighbors weren't coming to buy—they were coming to give. Twenty-dollar bills dropped into his jar. Fifty-dollar bills. One elderly man handed him a hundred and said, "Keep your Xbox, son."
By 2 PM, Ethan had raised $1,847.
Enough for Scout's surgery. Enough for a year of dog food. Enough to buy back his bike from the neighbor who "purchased" it.
Scout had the surgery Monday morning. He's home now, tail wagging, sleeping at the foot of Ethan's bed.
When a reporter asked Ethan if he was proud of himself, he just shrugged. "Scout would've done the same for me. That's what best friends do."
He's ten years old. And he just taught us all what matters. ❤️🐾

This is a great read and gives all the controversy…..
I have been talking about vaccines and creating alternative schedules for all ages for over 15 years! Let’s get real about informed consent and individual choice! It doesn’t have to be all or nothing - it’s your right to weigh the benefit to the risk for your children!
