This one is a little more personal for me.
My willingness to work with special populations didn’t start with massage school. I grew up with a special-needs older sister, and helping care for her has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I even practiced massage on her while I was going through school and learning the craft.
So when I entered massage school, working with people who needed a little more adaptation or consideration didn’t feel foreign to me. If anything, it made me curious.
I was one of the first students to step up to work with pregnant clients. I volunteered to work with a more complex multiple sclerosis case. During our massage medical clinic, I continued looking for opportunities to work with clients whose needs required me to think a little differently.
That curiosity has stayed with me throughout my career.
I’ve had the privilege of working with clients living with ALS, paraplegia, cancer, and clients receiving hospice care. Some have told me that other therapists were hesitant to work with them or simply said no.
I understand that there are times when massage isn’t appropriate, and there are conditions that require additional education, precautions, communication, or collaboration with a client’s healthcare team. Knowing when to say no is part of being a responsible therapist.
But I also believe that “this client needs a different approach” shouldn’t automatically mean “this client can’t receive massage.”
When it’s appropriate and within my scope, I’m willing to learn, adapt, listen, and meet the person in front of me where they are.
Because massage isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Different body. Different needs. Same compassion.
And sometimes, simply being willing to say, “Let’s see what we can do,” means a lot to someone who has heard “no” too many times.
If you or someone you know has unique needs or circumstances and has been hesitant to seek massage, you’re welcome to reach out. Let’s talk about what’s appropriate and how I may be able to accommodate you.
