Speaking up is a good thing.

A common misconception about consent is that talking about or getting consent will make the moment awkward or “ruin the mood”. In reality, the mood is more positive when both partners feel safe & can freely communicate about what they want.

Consent is important in all healthy relationships and is something that should be discussed openly and frequently!

If you’re caught up in the heat of the moment, here are some ways to get a temperature check before going any further: https://bit.ly/3tJCbiz

Domestic violence has often been framed as a "private family matter," but its impact reaches far beyond closed doors.

Intimate partner violence affects millions each year, impacts children, workplaces, schools, healthcare systems, courts, and entire communities. The CDC reports that over 41% of women and 26% of men in the U.S. experience contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

Domestic violence is not just personal. It is a public health issue. A human rights issue. A systemic issue.

And prevention requires more than asking survivors to leave- it requires education, accountability, trauma-informed systems, and cultural change.

We we continue to recognize that Mental Health Month we want to share more takeaways from the inaugural Collective Conversations Conference — hosted by and Springboard Community Services.

"Are we fostering hope — or fueling fear?"

That question from Dr. Wendy Ellis — founder of the Center for Community Resilience at George Washington University — is one we haven't stopped thinking about. And it gives us real reason for hope. Asking the right question is the beginning of creating real change. Dr. Ellis's Pair of ACEs framework reminds us that healing the child and healing the community are the same work. You cannot protect children in systems built on fear, silence, and instability. And you cannot build mentally healthy communities while childhood sexual abuse continues to thrive in the dark.

So what can we do?

Talk about it.
Teach body safety early and often.
Believe children when they speak up.
Support prevention organizations in your community.
Ask whether your child's school is teaching body safety education.
Advocate for the housing, education, and mental health resources that give every child a foundation for hope.

Takeaway #2 from last week's Collective Conversations Conference

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And the most important conversation we can have this month isn't about symptoms — it's about what's causing them in the first place. Because abuse doesn't thrive in isolation. It thrives in silence. In cultures that teach children to protect adults. In communities too uncomfortable to name what they're seeing. Changing the conversation means finding the courage to speak up — even when it's hard. Especially then.

A healthy relationship should support your emotional well-being, not make it harder. That can look like feeling heard, respected, and safe to be yourself, while having the space to grow and set boundaries.

If you’re wondering what healthy love really looks like, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
