Susan Lynne Rauen McBride died peacefully at her home in the Galena Territory on July 21, 2026, of complications from lung cancer. Susan was born September 15, 1945, in Chicago, IL, to George and Anne (nee Jensen) Rauen.

After raising her sons, Susan dedicated herself to a life of teaching, retiring from Chicago Public Schools. She taught hundreds of children at such schools as Queen of Apostles in Dolton, Rickover in Sauk Village, and Bowen High School in Chicago. She was also a self-taught ceramicist, an incredible baker, and the wittiest woman in the room.

Her civic contributions in later life focused on the Jo Daviess County Sheltered Workshop in Galena, known as The Workshop, where she served on the board and volunteered for nearly 20 years. Galena was a retirement dream community for Susan and Larry, where they enjoyed their new friends, golf, pickleball, annual festivals, and the natural beauty.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Peter, and her beloved husband of 47 years, Larry McBride. She is survived by her son, Mark (Amanda) of Denver, and grandsons, Liam and Ewan also of Denver, and her son, Todd (Jessica) of Galena. Contributions can be made in Susan’s memory to The Workshop.

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Phillips, 80, of Scales Mound, IL, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Friends may call from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena, IL. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Galena.

Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, cherished sister, and loyal friend whose kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Born and raised in the Galena area, Betty graduated from Galena High School. On February 19, 1966, Betty married the love of her life, Blaire F. Phillips, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Galena. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, family, and hard work, sharing 60 wonderful years of marriage.

She and her beloved husband, Blaire, owned and operated a dairy farm for many years before she began a career at Honeywell Micro Switch, where she remained a dedicated employee until her retirement. Nothing brought Betty greater joy than caring for her family and friends. She was affectionately known as the family’s cookie maker, remembered for her famous sugar cookies and Grandma’s icebox cookies, as well as the many homemade desserts she lovingly prepared. She found happiness tending her flowers, spending time with those she loved, and gathering around the breakfast table with friends to share stories, laughter, and life’s everyday blessings.

Above all else, Betty treasured the moments spent with her family, creating memories that will be cherished for generations. She is lovingly survived by her husband, Blaire of Scales Mound; her son, Kevin Phillips of Stockton; her daughter, Theresa Pooley of Scales Mound; and her three grandsons, Koy Matthew Phillips (Kally Jo Canon) of Apple River, Trinity Richard Pooley, and Chance Franklin Pooley, both of Scales Mound. She is also survived by her siblings, Robert Smith of IL, Raymond Smith of TX, and Janet McCabe of WI; her brother-in-law, Blaine Phillips of Loves Park; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alma Smith; her siblings, Albert “Sonny” Smith, Charles Smith, and Judy Greene; her parents-in-law, Franklin and Anna Phillips; and her brothers-in-law, Ellsworth “Bud”, Claire, and Dennis Phillips.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Scales Mound First Responders and EMTs, Galena Ambulance, Elizabeth Ambulance, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, and the staff of Furlong Funeral Chapel for their compassionate care, professionalism, and kindness.

Daniel J. Molitor, 78 of Savanna, IL and formerly Galena, IL passed away on July 2, 2026, at Midwest Medical Center in Galena. In keeping with his wishes there will be no public services. Cremation rites will be accorded. The Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is assisting the family.

He was born December 3, 1947, in Galena the son of Harry and Eleanor (DuBord) Molitor. A graduate of Galena High School, he continued his education at Rockford Community College. On October 7, 1967, he married the love of his life, Sally Gibbons, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Galena. They shared many happy years together until Sally’s passing on April 20, 2000.

Dan worked for many years at Rockford Clutch before returning to Galena, where he became a self-employed painter. He took great pride in his work and remained in the painting business until his retirement. An inventor at heart, he was always tinkering with a new idea or finding a better way to do something. He believed in the words, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it,” a quote that perfectly reflected his curious mind, creativity, and determination.

Dan survived by his daughters, Paula (Jeff) and Tracey (Todd) Blodgett; his grandchildren, Amanda and Cole; his step-grandson, Cory; his great-granddaughter, Avery; his sister, Kathleen (Jim) Pfeffer; his brother, Steve Molitor; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, his stepfather, Dick Funk; and his brothers, Bob, Bill, John, and Pat. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Matt Gullone and the outstanding staff at Midwest Medical Center, including the nurses, respiratory therapists, speech therapists, and all others who provided compassionate care during our father’s final days. Marvin Dewey Holland, 65, passed away at his home in Galena, IL on July 2, 2026. In accordance with Marvin’s wishes, he will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born on May 31, 1961, in Galena to Lewis A. and Marilyn B. (Zeal) Holland. On Nov. 25, 1995, he married Jane A. Vaughn at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Galena. Marvin spent his entire adult life working in the construction industry, where he developed a reputation for his craftsmanship and passion for restoration carpentry. He took great pride in preserving historic buildings and enjoyed bringing old structures back to life. Marvin was rarely seen without a hat, most often supporting his beloved Chicago Cubs.

A loyal Chicago Bears fan. Marvin and his wife were the proud owners of historic Camp 19 on Pool 12 of the Mississippi River near Galena. He cherished the property’s rich history and enjoyed sharing its stories with others. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, and spending time on the river. Marvin was also a long-time member of the Galena Boat Club. He was a member of the Galena High School Class of 1979 and was especially proud to have earned the Boy Scouts’ Order of the Arrow honor.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Jane Holland; his daughter, Kelsey (Owen) Skahill of Dubuque, IA; his sister, Nancy (Greg) Johnson of Roseville, MI; his nieces, Kim Herman of Mount Clemens, MI, and Lori Herman of Roseville, MI; and his great-niece, Taylor (Mason) Heilman of St. Clair Shores, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Paul Raymond Mills

Paul Raymond Mills passed away on June 17, 2026, at the age of 83. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena, IL where friends may gather after 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.

Military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American legion Post #193. Paul was born on February 10, 1943, in Dubuque, IA, to Mae (Spark) and Alfred Mills.

He was the third of four boys and grew up surrounded by his brothers, Albert, Robert, and Wayne. After losing his mother when he was only 15 years old and growing up without his father, his brothers became more than siblings—they became his family and best friends for life. After graduating from Dubuque Senior High School in 1962, Paul proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam as a Fire Tank Commander and carried great pride in his military service throughout his life.

When he returned home, Paul worked a variety of jobs before beginning a long career with John Deere in Dubuque, where he worked for more than 33 years before retiring. In August of 1967, Paul married Martha Wolf. Together they welcomed their daughter, Roxann, later that year and their son, Tony, in 1971.

Although their marriage eventually ended, they remained an important part of each other’s family story. In 1993, Paul married Karron Prell-Schmid of Galena. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, gardens, projects, and countless memories over nearly 33 years of marriage.

Paul was happiest when he was building something, fixing something, or bringing something old back to life. With the help of his wives and brothers he built three homes with his own hands. He enjoyed fishing with his buddies, gardening with Karron, and spending hours in his garage tinkering on projects.

Of all his hobbies, nothing captured Paul’s heart quite like his beloved red 1957 Chevy with its continental kit. He was a regular at Graffiti Nights and never missed a chance to talk about classic cars. As anyone who knew him would tell you, Paul truly “got off on ’57 Chevys.” Paul leaves behind his wife, Karron Mills of Galena, his former wife, Martha Mills of East Dubuque, IL; his daughter, Roxann (Steve) Krull of Chicago, IL; his grandsons, Ryley and Dylan Krull; and his son, Tony Mills of Baltimore, MD, his three stepchildren, Jay (Kathy) Schmid of Joshua, MN, Robin (John) Huibregtse of Mission Viejo, CA, and Jennifer (Chris) Bowen of Vail, AZ, and six step-grandchildren.

He was welcomed into heaven by his parents and his three brothers, Albert, Robert, and Wayne, whom he loved and missed greatly. The family would like to thank all of the relatives, friends, neighbors, and the many people who felt like family for their kindness, support, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time.

Paul will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, his service to his country, his ability to build just about anything, and the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Vada M. Waites, 91, of Dubuque, IA and formerly Galena, IL, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at Stonehill Health Care Center, Dubuque. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena, IL. Burial will be in St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery, in Galena. She was born May 1, 1935, in Thomson, IL the daughter of Charles and Lenna (Rice) Spencer. Vada was a graduate of Thomson High School. On July 31, 1954, she married the love of her life, Dr. Frank Waites, in Benton Harbor, MI. Together they built a life centered on service, family, and lasting friendships. She enjoyed many hobbies and interests throughout her life, including genealogy, sewing, knitting, ceramics, and singing at church with her daughters. She found great joy in preserving family history, creating beautiful handmade items, and sharing her faith through music.

Vada will be remembered for her devotion to family, faith, and community. A dedicated community volunteer and leader, she was actively involved in numerous organizations. Vada was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served as Regent in Jo Daviess County. She also served as president of the Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of Altar and Rosary and Fort Nightly of Galena. Her commitment to service touched countless lives and left a lasting impact on her community.

Vada is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Bill) Smith and Pamela (Rick) Hillard; grandchildren Rebecca (Melanie) Diercks, Matthew (Mandy) Diercks, Michelle (Nate) Sproule, and Michael Smith; great-grandchildren Ashton and Alex Sproule, Franklin and Ellie, Caleb and Charlie Diercks; three sisters, Pat, Joyce, and Bonnie; as well as many beloved nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; four sisters; and two brothers. Vada will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, strong faith, devotion to family, and dedication to serving others. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the family she cherished so deeply.

Elizabeth Ann “Bette Ann” Skrine passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Bette was born in Chicago, IL, on November 19, 1933, to Sylvia and Joseph Tipman. In 1952, she married her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life, Jack Skrine. Together they shared a loving marriage for 69 years. Their life together was the happiest and most fulfilling part of her life, and they were devoted to one another and to their family.

Bette was the loving mother of John (Jean), Joyce (Robert), and the late Patricia. She was the proud grandmother of Jason, Juliet, Michael, Ryan, Andrew, and Elisabeth. She was a dear sister to the late Robert Tipman and Joseph Tipman and is survived by her sister Dolores, along with many loving nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

Bette spent nearly her entire life in the Chicago area. Her final months were spent in Galena surrounded by the love of her family. She enjoyed vacationing in Las Vegas with her siblings over the years and loved traveling to Sarasota, FL, Bette and Jack spent time relaxing in the sun on the beach. Bette worked as a telephone operator before later working for Sears Roebuck and then Jewel-Osco, where she spent 25 years before retirement. During her working years, she made many lifelong friends and countless fond memories.

Bette found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved playing the slots, planting flowers in the spring, feeding the birds and squirrels in her backyard, and enjoying warm sunny days. She was an avid reader and could often be found with a book in her hands. She also loved a good card game and was always ready to sit down for a hand with family and friends.

In 2014, Bette and Jack moved to Mayslake Village in Oak Brook, IL, where they developed many special friendships and created wonderful memories. She truly loved living there and cherished the community she found. If you knew Bette, you knew her warm smile, her quick wit, and her ability to make anyone smile. She was incredibly organized and somehow always knew where everything was and how everything should be done, and her memory remained sharp til the very end.

She loved disco music, fresh flowers, and anything pink. She could often be heard humming while doing the dishes or going about her day. She had a giving and caring heart and was an amazing listener who was always there for her family and friends. Above all, Bette was devoted to the people she loved. Her warmth, humor, kindness, and unwavering love touched everyone who knew her.

Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in every family story shared around the table, every card game played among loved ones, and every pink flower that blooms in the sunshine. A celebration of life will be held at later date.

Irene “Nene” Menegas Beadle, 89, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026 in Galena, IL surrounded by her loving children after a brief illness. A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM, Monday, June 22, 2026, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Galena, where friends may call after 9 AM until the time of mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Furlong Funeral Chapel in Galena is assisting the family. Irene was born on March 8, 1937, to her Greek immigrant parents, Nicholas and Kaliope (Vrotsos) Menegas. Irene was born at the family home on Bench Street in Galena as the last of seven children.

Irene attended school in Galena and graduated with the Galena High School Class of 1955. She and her classmates gathered regularly for lunches to catch up — something she really enjoyed. After high school, she studied education at the University of Dubuque. She married Thomas R. “Pat” Beadle in May 1958. In her early years of marriage, she worked as a bookkeeper for Rooster Mills Feed in Dubuque, IA. She then chose to be a stay-at-home mother and devoted wife. Together she and Pat raised seven children and proudly restored their historic brick family home on Meeker Street. This home is on the Illinois Historic Preservation Register. Irene provided a loving home for her children but ran a tight ship. There were always three meals on the table and a homemade dessert every day after school. Irene was warm, loyal, and selfless — these gifts are present in her children and grandchildren. Irene was simple and humble.

She was happy with a long car ride, Friday night fish fry dates, attending sporting and school events as well as all the family gatherings with lots of good food. She was a fixture at Galena Pirate basketball games and also followed Cuba City basketball for many years. Anyone that knew her well would know that you could sit and talk high school and college basketball with her. She was also an avid New York Yankees fan and named her beloved dog “Jeter.” She was a great cook with one of her signature dishes being affectionately named “Grandma Nene Rice.” She also loved traditional Greek dishes like baklava and avogolemo soup. She was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and visited with them often. Later in life, when her kids were in school, Irene restarted her career and worked for the State of Illinois Historic Preservation office for 25 years.

She loved Galena, and Galena loved her. She will be forever missed by her family and friends. Surviving are five daughters, Kalli (Brian) Trevarthen, Laurie (Michael) Sproule, Leigh Ann (David) Eaton, all of Galena; Jayne (Joe) VandeMerkt-Cahill, of Geneva, IL; and Catherine (Bradley) Lenschow of Burlington, IL; and son Patrick (Martha) Beadle of Galena. Fourteen grandchildren, Anna Sproule (Matt) Heller, Lucas (Jenna) Trevarthen, Carmen (Mitchell) Phillips, William (Stephanie) VandeMerkt, Alexandra (Charlie) Faye, Jack VandeMerkt, Madeline (Lane) Morrison, Jacob Lenschow, Ellyn Lenschow, Michael Beadle, Emma Eaton (Josh Buss), Elizabeth Irene Eaton (Will Schott), and Samuel Eaton. Nine great-grandchildren, Zachary, Leah Irene, and Alaina Heller; Lettie, Leslee, and Landon Trevarthen; Halle and Tanner Phillips; and Ava VandeMerkt. Surviving is her sister-in-law, Joan Beadle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Michael Beadle, a grandson, Nicholas Sproule, and a son-in-law, Scott VandeMerkt. Also preceding her within the Menegas family were her brothers, George and Harry Menegas, and her sisters, Lila Heim, Frances “Frannie” Carter, Demetria “Tulie” Jameson, and Theodora “Dorie” Jaeger. Preceding her on the Beadle side were her parental in-laws, William and Wilhelmina Beadle, and her brothers and sisters in laws, Helen Petitgoue, Frances Murphy, Florence Bautsch, William Beadle, Jr., Donald Beadle, Vera Wienen, Catherine Seelye, Lucille Rusboldt, Virginia Armstrong, and Joanne “Nan” Foecking. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Galena Foundation, The Galena Education Foundation, or Hospice of Dubuque. Jon Clingman

Jon Clingman, 67, of Dubuque, IA, passed away on June 1, 2026. A gathering will be held from 1 to 3 PM, on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, IL. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be held at a later date. He was born on August 29, 1958, in Dubuque the son of Roy and Joan (Smith) Clingman. Jon’s passion was in building and supporting his community through his work and life. He was an active member of many organizations including Galena GOATS biking club, and Galena Rotary in addition to his time spent as the owner and proprietor of Clingman Pharmacy in Vinton, IA. In his free time, he enjoyed biking and exercising, including riding RAGBRAI each July. Those who knew him will remember him for kind heart, willingness to help, and community mindedness. Above all, Jon cherished his family and friends. His love, guidance, and presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered. He is survived by his wife Julie, his daughter Emma and son-in-law Zach, a sister, Connie (Dan) Consedine, a brother, Doug (Lea) Clingman, and his nieces and nephews.
