Chronic pain is generally defined as pain lasting longer than three months, persisting beyond the normal tissue healing timeline. That distinction matters more than people realize. Acute pain is the body's alarm system doing its job — tissue is damaged, nerves report it, you protect the area, it heals, the pain resolves. Chronic pain is what happens when that alarm system keeps firing long after the original injury (if there ever was one) has healed, or when an underlying condition continues to generate pain signals indefinitely.
