Preferences➡️Connection➡️Communication

✨As clinicians, it’s our job to incorporate goals into activities and toys that are meaningful and enjoyable for the client. When we acknowledge their needs, follow their motivation, and share in their joy, we create opportunities for engagement and progress.

✨ A client who loves Paw Patrol is a perfect example! If they are working on following directions, let’s set Chase on a mission to complete tasks! How about a storytelling goal? The client may include Paw Patrol characters, creating a concise story with a beginning, middle, and end. Therapy goals are more meaningful and motivating when they include preferences.

✨That doesn’t mean we completely avoid less-preferred activities! Transitioning from preferred to less-preferred activities is an important skill we can intentionally practice. Remember the importance of building rapport and trust as an initial step in therapy.

✨Find your clients’ preferences and start there!

You only need one thing for this activity: a beach ball!

If you don’t have a beach ball, a balloon is an excellent alternative. Great activity to play with one-on-one or in a small group!
