Some careers begin with a calling. For Joanne, it began with her son. ❤️

When Joanne joined Memorial Regional Hospital earlier this year as part of the Memorial Neuroscience Institute team, it marked a deeply personal full-circle moment for her family.

When her son Michael was young, he began experiencing seizures, developmental delays and serious health complications that left doctors searching for answers. Joanne says everything changed when they arrived at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. 🏥

Michael was eventually diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and epilepsy after his condition rapidly progressed and affected multiple organs throughout his body.

Joanne credits the team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, including Dr. Greissman, Dr. Wiers-Shamir and many others, with helping save her son’s life during one of the most difficult chapters her family has faced.

That experience inspired her to change careers and enter healthcare herself. 🩺

Today, Joanne is part of the Memorial family, caring for patients while never forgetting the team that cared for hers. ❤️

Nikki rang the bell. 🔔❤️

For her family, it was more than the end of treatment. It was the culmination of countless appointments, difficult days, small victories and hope.

When Nikki was diagnosed with cancer, life changed overnight. Through treatments, scans and hospital visits, she continued to show incredible strength and resilience, reminding everyone around her what courage looks like.

Throughout her journey, the team at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital provided not only expert care, but comfort, encouragement and support for Nikki and her entire family. Today, Nikki is in remission and focused on what she loves most: being a kid, spending time with family and friends, and creating new memories.

MRI scans can feel overwhelming for children, especially when staying still in a loud, unfamiliar environment. 🗣️

Thanks to support from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, pediatric patients at Memorial Hospital Miramar now have access to specialized VR entertainment technology designed to help make MRI exams less stressful and more comfortable. Similar technology has also been provided at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to help enhance the patient experience.

By allowing children to watch movies during their scan, this technology can help reduce anxiety, improve cooperation and, in some cases, even decrease the need for sedation, creating a better experience for both patients and families. 🎥

Because when care is designed around children, even the smallest moments can feel a little less scary. 🫶

At just 13 years old, Jaylin was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma. Through six months of chemotherapy, hospital stays, blood transfusions and countless appointments, she never stopped dancing.

Sometimes, she went straight from chemo to dance class.

“Dancing helped me mentally,” Jaylin says. “I felt free.” ❤️

Now 16, cancer-free and back to doing what she loves, Jaylin continues to compete in dance while helping her family open their own studio. Along the way, she says the uplifting nurses, Child Life specialists and expert care teams made even the toughest days feel a little brighter. 🫶

Her advice for other kids facing cancer: “Always be confident. Stay strong. You’re going to get through it.”

Recently, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital celebrated an unforgettable milestone honoring patients as they marked their school graduations and all the hard work, perseverance and moments that led them here.

From cap-and-gown moments to decorated caps, big smiles and special moments shared together, the day was a reminder that every achievement deserves to be celebrated.

This year’s prom celebration gave our teenage patients who were unable to attend their own school dance a night to simply have fun be together and make memories that will last long after the music stopped. 💃🕺🪩

Patients and their guests enjoyed plenty of special moments throughout the night.
