Every overdose loss is more than a statistic. It's a son, daughter, parent, friend, or loved one.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day and we honor those we've lost, stand with grieving families and remind anyone struggling that recovery is possible.

Recognizing substance use in a friend or family member can be difficult, especially when changes happen gradually.

Substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failing.

Early support and treatment can make a significant difference in recover y and long-term health.

Here are some simple signs to watch for:

Changes in Behavior
• Becoming secretive or dishonest
• Avoiding family, friends, or activities they once enjoyed
• Sudden mood swings, irritability, or anger
• Lack of motivation or interest in responsibilities
• Frequent financial problems or asking for money

Physical Warning Signs
• Bloodshot or glazed eyes
• Unusual weight loss or weight gain
• Changes in sleeping habits
• Poor hygiene or appearance
• Frequent nosebleeds, shaking, or slurred speech

Changes at Work or School
• Missing work, school, or appointments
• Declining performance or grades
• Increased absenteeism
• Loss of interest in career or educational goals

Signs at Home
• Missing prescription medications
• Finding drug paraphernalia such as pipes, syringes, rolling
papers, or pill bottles without labels
• Unexplained odors on clothing or in rooms
• Frequent need for privacy or locking doors

Emotional Signs
• Depression, anxiety, or paranoia
• Becoming unusually defensive when questioned
• Isolating from loved ones
• Extreme highs and lows in mood or energy

When to Be Concerned
One sign alone does not necessarily indicate substance use. However, several signs occurring together, especially over time, may suggest that someone is struggling and needs support.

How to Help
✅ Approach them with care and concern, not judgment.
✅ Choose a private time to talk.
✅ Focus on specific behaviors you've noticed rather than making accusations.
✅ Listen without interrupting.
✅ Encourage professional help if needed.
