Pumping moms—you don’t have to spend what little free time you have standing at the sink washing pump parts after every single session. 🙌🏼
If you have a healthy, full-term baby who doesn’t have any health or immune concerns, the “fridge hack” may be a helpful option for your family.
After pumping, rinse off any remaining milk when possible, place your pump parts in a clean gallon-size ziplock bag or sealed container, and store them in the refrigerator between pumping sessions. Then, once a day, take everything completely apart and wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Rinse well and allow the parts to air-dry completely.
This can save so much time and energy—especially when you’re already pumping around the clock, caring for a baby, and surviving on very little sleep. One less round of dishes can make a difference!
The CDC’s safest recommendation is still to wash pump parts after every use because refrigeration slows bacterial growth but doesn’t completely stop it. I wouldn’t recommend the fridge method for babies born prematurely, or babies with health or immune concerns.
As always, choose the option that feels safest and works best for your family. 💜
