Alzheimer's is a complex condition, and a wide variety of symptoms can appear as a result of its various stages, from apathy to euphoria to hallucination, on top of the general loss of short-term memory.

We liked this online course from the Caregiver Action Network that covers the neuropsychiatric symptoms of Alzheimer’s that most patients will experience to some degree at some point in their journey, as well as some possible treatments and medications to ask their care provider about. Caring for an aging loved one is a beautiful and important task, but also quite challenging. If you find yourself in that situation, we recommend giving this booklet from AARP a read about how to care for yourself while caring for someone else. It’s a bit long, but full of great insight about how taking care of yourself can help you take the best care of someone else, as long as some risk factors and warning signs to look out for to protect your own wellbeing.

From the booklet: “Caring for family members or friends can be deeply rewarding, but it also takes a toll. It’s often stressful, physically and mentally exhausting, emotionally draining and at times traumatic. Many caregivers experience anxiety, depression and burnout; some develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As you focus on meeting the needs of others, it’s easy to neglect your own wellbeing, which can make everything feel even harder to manage.”

Not long ago, we had the honor of working with Gina*. Gina was an elder who wanted to stay in her own home and community, despite the challenges that come with age.

When Gina's family reached out to their local senior center for help, we signed her up for meal delivery, provided daily transportation, and got her connected with a tribal Navigator to help with home needs like heating oil. This support enabled Gina to safely live in her own home, with the essential support and resources she needed to spend her final years in the environment and with the people she knew and loved.

Thanks to our community of support, Gina was empowered to live the last phase of her life as she saw fit, and her family had what they needed to honor her wishes. Thank you for being a support to Southeast Alaska.

While there isn’t a cure for Alzheimer’s yet (though we’re hopeful!), understanding some of the underlying causes of the disease can help us take major steps toward prevention, and help mitigate ongoing symptoms. We thought this article from the Alzheimer's Association was a really useful resource to begin thinking through how we can each give our brain the best chance to age well, including some unexpected contributors like diet, blood pressure, and even seat belts!
