One of the most common questions I get as an independent equine therapy specialist is:
💬 “What’s the difference between PEMF and Red Light Therapy, and which one works better?”
The answer? They’re both excellent tools, they work differently but brand marketing has made the outcome sound the same.
🧲 PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) uses electromagnetic fields to stimulate cellular activity, increase circulation, reduce inflammation, promote recovery, and help the body function more efficiently. Typically will pe*****te the body to a deep muscular level.
🔴 Red Light Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light that pe*****te tissue and stimulate cellular energy production, supporting healing and recovery at the treatment site.
💬 “So,when would I choose each?”
🧲 PEMF is commonly used for:
• Deep muscle support
• Inflammation management
• Joint comfort
• Bone healing support
• Whole-body recovery and wellness
🔴 Red Light Therapy is commonly used for:
• Skin issues such as scratches and wounds
• Tendon and ligament support
• Targeted areas of soreness
• Facial and poll discomfort
• Localized recovery applications
💁🏻♀️ My recommendation:
If budget isn’t a factor, PEMF is often my first choice because of its versatility and ability to support the entire body. However, Red Light Therapy remains an incredibly effective therapy option and can be an excellent alternative when PEMF isn’t practical or within budget.
At the end of the day, the best therapy is the one that matches your horse’s needs, your ability for continuous application, and your budget.
💬 “I still don’t know which one to choose”
