If you are helping a parent or loved one get ready for Medicare's fall review, here is the most important first step: ask.

Ask if they would like help. Ask what they are comfortable sharing. Ask before you make a call or fill out a form on their behalf.

A few ways to help without taking over:
1. Offer to organize paperwork together, not for them
2. Write down questions in their own words
4. Sit in on a call only if they want you there
5. Let them make the final decision, even if you see it differently
