Water beads can be very dangerous around small children. When put in water, they expand up to 1,500 times their original size. Because water beads can look like candy, kids will sometimes put them in their mouth and swallow them. If you think your child might have swallowed water beads, seek medical attention right away. Many of the diseases that once kept children out of school, hospitalized, or facing lifelong complications have become rare thanks to vaccines. From measles and polio to whooping cough and meningitis, immunizations help protect children from serious illnesses before they're exposed. Summer means vacations, camps, and lots of family time together. But with more travel and social gatherings, contagious diseases can spread more easily — especially to babies and others who are more vulnerable to serious illnesses.

Staying up to date on recommended vaccines helps protect your family and supports community immunity, making summer activities safer for everyone.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4. The AAP recommends using multiple layers of water safety protection, since no single method can prevent drowning. These layers work together and include pool fences, alarms, supervision, water safety skills, life jackets, and being ready to respond with CPR. Close, constant attentive and competent supervision is essential whenever kids are playing in and around water. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3zcwocX

There’s an increase in cyclosporiasis (a parasite that can cause watery, sometimes explosive, diarrhea) reported in multiple states. What to know:

🌱 Cyclosporiasis is often linked to fresh produce. UPDATE AS OF JULY 13: While the investigation is ongoing, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has reported that current results point to lettuce or salad greens as a potential source for this outbreak, although other food items cannot be completely ruled out. No specific type of produce, grower, or supplier has yet been identified as the source. Public health professionals are still hard at work investigating.

🗓️ Symptoms usually start 2–14+ days after exposure.

✅ Direct person-to-person spread is unlikely.

🥼It can be treated with antibiotics, plus rest and hydration. Talk to a health care provider if you have symptoms.

🚽 If not treated, symptoms may last from a few days to over a month and can recur.

NOTE: While washing produce is always important and could reduce risk, cooking produce is a more reliable way to kill the parasite.

We will share updates when we learn more.
