Dartmouth Cancer Center was proud to serve as the Mission Sponsor for the recent Relay For Life of Greater Manchester, held at Preston Park in Bedford on May 31.

In opening remarks, Dr. Bassem Zaki highlighted Dartmouth Cancer Center’s commitment to providing comprehensive, cutting-edge cancer care, including the growth of specialized cancer care teams serving communities across southern New Hampshire. He also spoke about the importance of our National Cancer Institute designation and the vital work of American Cancer Society in advancing cancer research, advocacy, and patient support.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and supported this inspiring event. Together, we are making a difference for patients, survivors, caregivers, and families affected by cancer.

The foods you choose each day play a powerful role in supporting your energy levels.

“Food is more than just fuel—it’s part of how we care for our bodies during treatment and recovery,” says Nicole Parker, LD, RD, a registered dietitian at Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC). “When you think of food as medicine, it helps highlight how important nutrition is to overall health and well-being.”

Eli Brown, a 14 year-old Prouty participant, has launched a powerful fundraiser for his second Prouty. As a member of the Upper Valley Rowing and Friends team, Eli set his fundraising goal at an incredible $10,000 this year. His approach to getting there? To dig, plant, clean up, and help neighbors throughout the Upper Valley with their yards this spring and summer in exchange for donations. This timely fundraiser has taken off and in just a few weeks, Eli has already raised over $2,900! We love it when our participants get creative with their fundraising. This one clearly shows that fundraising can take many forms and be done by Proutyers of all ages. Great job, Eli!

Cancer tumors are surrounded by immune cells, but not all of those cells help the body fight back. Some support anti-cancer immunity, while others can unexpectedly help tumors survive.

A new study led by Claudia Jakubzick, PhD, a member of the Dartmouth Cancer Center Immunology & Cancer Immunotherapy Research Program, shows that where immune cells are located within a tumor can reveal whether they are helping or hurting the anti-cancer response.

“Every day, I get to talk with people—former patients, volunteers, donors, nonprofits, state agencies, fellow staff—who all bring something to nourish our patients during their hardest days,” reflects Stephanie “Annie” Aquila MSW, LICSW, Dartmouth Cancer Center’s Continuing Care Manager for the Office of Care Management..

Annie is frequently humbled by the generosity of the community, including moments like the Grafton County Pemi Baker Centennial Lions Club and the Walmart Supercenter Vision Center teaming up to provide eyeglasses to a patient who couldn’t afford them, or Dartmouth College students writing heartfelt messages of support and goodwill to patients. Recently, a local hairdresser offered to donate new wigs right after a patient wondered how she could afford one.

Annie is part of a team of oncology social workers that we are honoring—not just for the resources they secure or the systems they navigate—but for their presence, advocacy, and humanity.
