Christine Coyle of Thetford Center knows that cancer treatment addresses the physical illness, but the psychological impact requires its own kind of care.

"Not only are you not well and need treatment, but that is a psychological trauma that goes right along with your medical problems," Christine says.

After her stage 3 ovarian cancer diagnosis, six rounds of chemotherapy, and surgery, Christine found support through Dartmouth Health's ConnectShareCare Living With and Beyond Cancer group—a virtual peer network where survivors connect, share, and process their experiences together.

The group's 53 members have become an extended family for Christine, offering understanding that comes from shared experience.

"The way they hear you is different than the way other people hear you. And the way they offer advice is different, too."

Part of our Complementary Care Program, this online forum allows participants to post and respond anytime, day or night, creating a space where no one has to walk the cancer journey alone. Thanks to WCAX-TV for helping to raise awareness about the group.

Cooking meat, especially red meat, at very high temperatures, such as grilling and charbroiling, forms chemical compounds called HCAs that have been linked to cancer. The good news? "Grilled vegetables and fruit do not form HCAs and are perfectly safe to eat," says Elise Cushman, RD, a board-certified specialist in nutrition at Dartmouth Cancer Center.

Some of her favorite outdoor go-tos include grilled peaches and grilled shrimp-and-pineapple skewers. In addition to these recipes, Elise shares easy ways to reduce the hidden dangers of grilling.

Cancer survivorship rates for cancer are growing every year as detection and treatments continue to improve. There are nearly one million cancer survivors living in New England right now alone. The combination of cancer and intense treatment, however, leaves many survivors with physical consequences, emotional scars, and medical debt.

We know the struggles that surviving cancer causes for our patients, even after they've won the hardest battle. It's why we've increased out survivorship and complementary care budget by 19 percent this year and added exercise classes and coaching.

Knowing that the average cost of the first year of cancer treatment is over$43,000 for U.S. cancer patients, we also offer to connect survivors with financial advisers to help manage their medical costs. “Everyone who walks through our door gets to speak to a financial counselor,” Linda Vahdat, MD, deputy director of Dartmouth Cancer Center, told The Boston Globe. “The cost of care is ridiculous.”
